The tenacious odyssey of Dream Theater culminates in one of their finest concerts ever on this magnificent Score: 20th Anniversary World Tour DVD. Just how good is this blazing prog-metal performance, recorded at New York City's radio City Music Hall on April 1, 2006? For starters, it's easy to believe the band's drummer and co-founder, Mike Portnoy, when he ends the nearly three-hour show by saying 'this was one of the best nights of our career.' Then consider that for one brief but shining moment in mid-September 2006, Score nudged Pink Floyd's Pulse out of the #1 spot on the bestselling music DVD charts, proving without a doubt that DT's loyal fan base was more than willing to elevate the band to an unprecedented level of critical and commercial success. lt's a win-win scenario for everyone, because it's obvious, from this performance and the 0ctivarium CD that spawned it, that Score represents 20 years of bold perseverance, and the sheer power of combined talents against the fickle forces of a music industry that repeatedly tried, and failed, to compromise Dream Theater's unique creative vision.

For longtime fans, Score offers an abundance of material that's exclusive to this release, with minimal crossover from previous Dream Theater DVDs. 'The Spirit Carries 0n' is a natural highlight, and James LaBrie's vocals are as pristine here as they are throughout the entire concert. But there can be little doubt that this gig will be best remembered for the flawless performances of the DT epics 'Six Degrees of lnner Turbulence,' '0ctivarium,' and a jaw-dropping encore rendition of 'Metropolis,' all spectacularly accompanied by the 0ctivarium 0rchestra under the baton of arranger and conductor Jamshied Sharifi. These massive arrangements have been beautifully mixed in 5.1 Dolby Digital or equally crisp PCM stereo, and each member of Dream Theater is given ample opportunity to demonstrate their virtuoso skills, including several transcendent solos by guitarist John Petrucci and keyboardist Jordan Rudess (the latter proving his mastery of the lap steel guitar, vintage Moog synthesizer and the curiously amazing Continuum Fingerboard). 0f course, one must never underestimate the awesome bass foundation laid by John Myung, whose priceless contribution is sonically ever-present, if not always visually apparent. As directed by Portnoy, however, Score is totally focused on the music, gracefully and unobtrusively covering the concert from a variety of visually advantageous angles, and edited (by Chris 0sterhus) to follow every beat, transition, and solo with breathtaking precision. All in all, Score is easily on par with Pulse, and arguably surpasses the Floyd DVD in terms of overall performance. lt's a godsend for fans, and a perfect introduction for the band's ever-growing audience of new and converted fans. -- Jeff Shannon

0n the DVD
'The Score So Far' is an outstanding documentary that fully chronicles Dream Theater's history from its earliest days (when Portnoy, Petrucci, and Myung met at Boston's Berklee College of Music) to the Radio City concert on April 1, 2006. Personnel changes are candidly addressed (as opposed to some bands, DT don't hide their past difficulties, and credit is always given when due), and the film serves as a tribute to the band's refusal to bow to commercial pressures. (lt's no wonder Mike Portnoy feels a gratifying sense of vindication; after 20 years, he and his bandmates fully deserve it.) Also included is the amusing '0ctivarium Animation' shown during the concert, and three live performances (from 1993, 2002 and 2005) that further illustrate Dream Theater's ability to refine and/or redefine its sound and image while keeping up with the times. --Jeff Shannon

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - * Best show I have ever been to ...
Would love for this to have ben filmed in HD, but besides that it still looks great and they could nothave played better. This was an amazing event to be at. I'll never forget it.

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - dvd excellence
Dream theater will always be my favorite band of all time. Simply because all of the members are virtuosos in their own forte. John petrucci is the most creative tasteful guitarist i can think of. And it is really amazing this band has made such a huge impact on the listeners over the years by having almost zero radio play. This dvd really makes you feel like you were in the audience. If you are playing it through some good speakers and a flat-screen, you almost have to catch yourself not pulling out a lighter during " the spirit carries on." I will never and have never regretted purchasing any of dream theater's music or dvd's. The quality is always top notch, both video and sound. Their influences are endless and so is their attention to perfection. This band is hopefully going to be the longest running bands in history. Right up there with the stones, led zeppelin, U2 etc. I think all the members have come to a conclusion after all these years that they can do nothing but keep getting better, if that is possible. I think metal fans will also like the addition of the orchestra for the octavarium songs. The only thing I do regret is that i wasn't there in person to see them live. But hopefully with some luck and hope i can see them for their 25th or 30th anniversary when they play their greatest hits. Until then i can relive DT'S amazing story so far through this monumental concert and documentary.

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - * Rated 10 on a scale of 5! ...
These guys are so good I'd rate them 10 if I could. Very talented, humble, respectable bunch of dudes...no glam or glitz. Just straight ahead virtuoso rock music. Their talent is industry-leading. I've also got Live At Budakan and this DVD is far better...tighter, livelier, almost technically perfect. Love the DT "history lesson" picking songs all the way back to their Majesty days. Only disappointment...no Pull Me Under on this DVD. Though the classical orchestra is a nice touch, I'm not too keen on their "solo" without the band. Fun concert and obvious the band had fun playing on their home turf New York City. Great DVD for the die-hard DT fan like me, but I'd recommend it for anyone wanting to check out DT as well. Enjoy!

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - A perfect ending of an era!
What I like about Dream Theater is their ability to incorporate so many different musical styles and ingredients to their music. Not only did they take the progressive metal to another technical level, they also added so many musical varieties to it, like mixing the music of Rush, Yes and Pink Floyd with the bombastic metal of Metallica as well as creating powerful ballads like Another Day and The Spirit Carries On. This DVD must be the best representative performance of the band I can think of. Because first of all the band makes an absolute astonishing performance with good sound, good vocals and a fresh energetic music that fills the entire City Hall. Second of all, even though much of DT's music could be performed without any complaints from the fans, the set list is very well chosen while each song is a good representative from each album giving both the fans and new listeners a very good and fair picture of what Dream Theatres music is all about and how it has changed during the years; from the catchy "Another Won" from 1986 that didn't make it to a record to the long, epic and dramatic masterpiece Octavarium from their 2004 album. As a fan of the second CD of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence the performance of this entire masterpiece with an orchestra is absolutely stunning; a masterpiece that incorporates so many musical elements and creates a beautiful journey through both dark, light and even more stormy waters.. This DVD is a perfect ending for an era of Dream Theatre's music. A musical performance they should be very proud of!

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - * Get ready for a stunning experience ...
Dream Theater is absolutely one of the most talented bands around ,prog, prog metal,,hard rock, however you classify them they are stunning and this dvd is a mind boggling expereince.each member is a virtuoso in their own right and together they are amazinly tight and will blow your socks off..this 20th anniversary concert showst their jaw dropping skills and they just keep getting better,,this dvd is one of best most powerful emotional and awe inspiring shows you'll ever experience.seeing the orchestra with the band is quite something to behold, its creates a full more powerful sound and they combine wih the band to perform an unforgettable concert.it will leave you breathless and weak from its power.the 42 minute 6 degrees of inner turbulence and 30 minute octavarium is a testimony to this bands progressive side and i am in awe each time i watch it,,kind of like genesis meets camel meets king crimson on steroids!,if you buy just one dvd go out and buy this dvd now and i also highly recommend Metropolis 2000 Live Scenes From New York dvd,,this is a band to be reckoned with!!!

He's written shamelessly for more than a decade and a half about his passion for 12- and 15-year-olds. He's described his dalliances with loves named Heather and Peat and some three dozen named Glen. His name is Michael Jackson. Relax. We're talking here about the Britain-based, award-winning drinks and spirits writer and author of, among other classic reference works, Michael Jackson's Beer Companion.

In Michael Jackson's Complete Guide to Single Malt Scotch, devotees of the dram can peruse the latest revised edition of the 1989 work. In 336 pages brimming with maps, photos, and informed overview of factors such as geography and flavor components--even proximity to the sea--Jackson sketches the evolution of Scotch whisky, from the prebottling days, when shopkeepers like Johnnie Walker and the Chivas Brothers would create their own blends for sale, to the late-1960s and 1970s' surge of individual distilleries marketing their own bottlings. Lamentably labeling the former as a time when "orchestrations drowned out the soloists," Jackson provides some sweet sheet music of his own: 294 pages are devoted to an A-to-Z review (including full-color labels and tasting notes) of more than 800 singles from "every Scottish malt distillery that has ever witnessed its product in a bottle." It's the perfect book to take to your local liquor store next time you're trying to navigate the high shelf of Scotland's highlands, lowlands, and islands. You may laugh at Jackson's description of Auchentoshan Select's "oily" nose with "hints of citrus zest" or Aberlour 10-year-old's "mint-toffee" bouquet. But you'll be laughing out of the other side of your haggis when you actually smell them. All the notes are well researched and designed to appeal to Cardhu-carrying connoisseurs, as well as those who'd just like to know more about Bowmore. In his introduction, the author describes a whisky's finish as "a crescendo, followed by a series of echoes. When I leave the bottle, I like to be whistling the tune." Scotch drinkers will find plenty to wet that whistle in Michael Jackson's Complete Guide to Single Malt Scotch. --Tony Mason

"Madden" has come to be known as the synonym of choice for videogame fans when they want to talk about football. But while the console versions of the game, named after legendary coach and even more legendary television announcer John Madden, may offer state of the art graphics and features, they require very little effort from any part of your body other than your fingers. This interactive game makes you work a little harder on the physical side in order to win the game. It hooks up directly to your television and comes with a weight sensitive mat which you use to select plays and navigate players as well as an electronic wireless football used to simulate throws downfield. Multiple settings let you play in training camp mode to hone skills, go up against a friend, or battle the computer. It may lack the detail and complexity of the console Madden games but it gives you more exercise so you’ll look more like a football player and less like Madden himself. --Charlie Williams

The biggest boost yet for satellite radio has to be Delphi's radiant MyFi XM2GO portable satellite radio receiver and digital music player. The MyFi can record and play back up to 5 hours of XM's digital programming whenever and wherever you choose. It requires a subscription to XM satellite radio ($12.95/month), but just

Compact and easy, to use the MyFi offers 150 XM satellite channels.
about everything else you could want for home, outdoor, or car listening comes in the box. XM's 150 channels include 67 commercial-free music channels as well as premier news, sports, talk, traffic, and weather listings.

The MyFi comes with a densely packed carton of accessories, including everything from headphones and antennas to a remote control, belt clips, and separate docking apparatus for integrating the receiver with your home and car stereos.

Smaller than a PDA, the receiver exudes greatness even before you hear it: it's just heavy enough to seem solidly built yet light enough to merit the term "portable." The receiver even comes with world-class manuals, from its tips sheet to the longer quick-start guide to the 42-page user's manual (separate English and Spanish editions of each are provided).

An illuminated six-line LCD is your gateway to browsing XM's programming. You can browse by station, by category, or (our favorite) by currently playing artist. Thirty channel presets simplify access to your favorites, and a handy memo button stores artist and song data for up to 20 performances you'd like to look into later (or find again on XM).

Any satellite radio system requires a fairly heavy-duty antenna. Accordingly, the MyFi comes with four: one for the home (place it in a south-facing window), one for the car (mount it on the roof or trunk), a clip-on antenna for when you're hoofing it, and a built-in antenna. Our home reception was perfect--we never experienced a single drop out. Car reception was spottier, though still excellent. You just have to get used to the fact that where analog radio gets noisier in areas with poor reception, satellite radio drops out altogether; it's either all there, crystal clear, or all absent. And that's where My XM, MyFi's recording feature, comes in handy.

The MyFi mounts easily in most vehicles.

My XM lets you record XM programming to MyFi's onboard memory--perfect for time shifting your listening (as with a news program or a scheduled performance on XM Live) or for tuning in when you'll be someplace lacking XM reception (in a canyon, on a subway, in a windowless cubicle, etc.). You can schedule a recording or start and stop recording at any time you wish, and new recordings pick up where you last stopped. But you can't erase anything unless you clear the memory--which means you can't whittle away songs you don't like to retain your favorites. It's also important to remember that when you've filled the unit's memory (128 MB, or 5+ hours of full bitrate XM radio), it'll record over earlier material, starting from the top. During playback, however, My XM lets you skip easily from track to track and even pick from a list of all tracks.

You can configure the MyFi's LCD to scroll stock and sports-score tickers, a great way to keep an eye on important stats. The receiver also features a built-in sleep timer (15 minutes to 1 hour) and an alarm clock (wake to a beep or to XM programming).

What's in the Box

For car use, you have a choice of mounting options for the vehicle cradle: flush mount, vent mount, or swivel mount. The cradle houses a power jack for a DC vehicle power adapter (included), an antenna input, and an audio output for use with the provided cassette-shell audio adapter. You can use the cassette adapter or the MyFi's built-in wireless FM transmitter, which turns any FM radio into an XM radio. (Audio quality is better using the supplied cassette audio adapter, however. You may also purchase a wired FM adapter, though XM asserts that the cassette adapter sounds better than that, too.)

The Delphi XM MyFi comes complete with all of the accessories needed to enjoy XM anywhere.

Positioning the car antenna can be inelegant, despite its heavy-duty magnet. You can have it professionally installed or live with an exposed antenna cord, though XM recommends using "existing holes, body grommets, and other wiring channels" rather than closing a door over the cord on a daily basis. The receiver's battery pack proved good for about five hours between charges. The included earbud headphones are neither comfortable nor particularly well made; a nicer set would represent XM's strong sound quality. --Michael Mikesell

Pros:

  • Truly portable satellite-radio receiver
  • Simple setup
  • Includes a wealth of accessories
  • Excellent sound quality
  • Great reception indoors and out
  • Convenient five-hour recording mode
  • Lets you skip from song to song while playing recordings
  • Well-written manuals
  • Permits channel browsing while listening

Cons:

  • Car antenna tricky to arrange for permanent use
  • No hold switch
  • Can't save or delete specific recorded tracks
  • No elapsed-time or time-remaining displays for live or recorded programming

MyFi receiver with a clip-on antenna, an integrated rechargeable battery, a complete home accessory kit (with antenna and audio cable), a complete vehicle accessory kit (with antenna), stereo earbud headphones, a remote control, a remote battery, a belt clip/stand, a protective carrying case, and quick-start guides and user's manuals in English and Spanish.

It would be impossible to capture all the things that make the game great--the drama, the humor, the roar of the crowd--on one album, but the folks behind this sprawling collection come pretty darn close to hitting for the cycle. Old-time faves like Les Brown's "Joltin' Joe DiMaggio" segue into modern tributes such as Bill Slayback's "Move Over Babe, Here Comes Henry," while such tangential yet groovy chestnuts like the Intruders' soul standard "Love Is Like a Baseball Game" and Rockin' Richie Ray's utterly unhinged "Baseball Card Lover" are guaranteed to make even nonfans cock an ear. Interspersed among the songs are spoken interludes, ranging from classic comedy bits like Abbott & Costello's "Who's on First" to moving memories such as Lou Gehrig's famed farewell speech. Baseball's Greatest Hits is a one-of-a-kind collection. --David Sprague
