* Great update ...
This year's update picked up all the major changes to our roads we've had in the past year. It was worth it for that alone.

Review of 2008 Garmin Update
I bought this for my father's Garmin so I am not sure how the maps work yet. However in loading it I received a message that the model my dad has could not load all the maps so I just chose US, could not load Canada. I intend to contact Garmin to find out why. Loading it was quick and easy and the price from Amazon was the best on the Internet.

* garmin update software ...
This was a gift for my husband. He wasn't real impressed with it because it didn't update our local area. This leaves us wondering if it updated areas we aren't familar with. We probably won't order anymore updates.

Something to factor into total cost of ownership.
I live in the South bay area, CA. For the most part the coverage here is fairly complete, my apartments were completed several years ago and the maps still aren't aware of two of the public streets that cross through the complex, not a big deal because I'm aware of them, but it does lead to some funky routing sometimes.
The POI database is still rather bloated, I think if Garmin stopped trying to be the yellow pages and instead concentrated on frequently used things. The search algorithm they use to fetch results might be at fault here, it will try to partial match everything, so seaching for 'REI' will return every company that has REI as part of a word in the name. Again, probably not the fault of the maps, but it shows off how overboard the POI database is when it returns six lawyers, five plumbers, and a handful of dentists, instead of the recreational equipment store.
The maps themselves seem accurate, I've made several trips around the city and not had any problems thus far. Also keep in mind that this only works on a single garmin unit. Not a big deal for me since I only have my nuvi, but other people have been giving this a poor review because they had to buy multiple licenses for their individual units.

* 2008 Map Software ...
BEFORE beginning the upload or install process visit the Garmin web site & be certain that your GPS is up to date.
The install process went very smoothly once the GPS unit was updated to its latest firmware. After updating your GPS the map upload takes about 40 minutes or so. The updated maps are just fine.
Should you encounter any problems with the updates the Garmin tech support people are very adept at getting you through them.
I WOULD recommend this product for purchase. And, I might add ..... had the best price for it.
