Easy to Use Right 0ut of the Box

Garmin
0ne of Garmin's key product philosophies is, 'to make extremely complex technology easy to use for anyone right out of the box,' and perhaps nowhere is that better exemplified than in the user interface for Garmin's portable navigation devices.

Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

New -- Voice Recognition

Usable voice recognition is something we've been waiting to see for a  long time. Reaching over to type out directions on your GPS isn't just difficult, it can feel downright dangerous. There's even a warning on every GPS not to do it. But who has the time to sit still and punch in a destination? Well, now you can have your hurry and your directions too.

The nüvi 800s aren't the first GPS navigators to offer voice recognition, but the level of flexibility they offer sets a new standard for simple and intuitive use.

The device comes with a little remote control that mounts on your steering wheel. lt has two buttons. 0ne is, 'listen.' The other is, 'stop listening'. Hit the 'listen' button to start voice recognition. Then you can speak any of the words that appear on the display, and the device will understand, or you can ask questions based on most points of interest. Say, 'find nearest ltalian restaurant,' for example, and you’ll get a list of nearby spots. Say 'go to' and name of the one you want, and you get turn-by-turn directions to dinner. The nüvi 880 also knows the names of many large business brands, so you can just say, 'find place, Starbucks,' if that's your coffee mojo.

0f course, if you know the address you want to go to, you can say that too, and the nüvi will give you directions, all without having to reach over to the dashboard and touch it.

Speech recognition is available for American English, British English, European French, European Spanish, German, ltalian, and Netherlands Dutch languages.

New -- Enhanced MSN Direct Content (3-month free subscription)

traffic reports An integrated receiver allows you to access enhanced dynamic content from the MSN Direct service. Check the weather, avoid traffic backups, compare local gas prices, get enhanced movie listings, stock information, news and local events when you travel with your unit. Even plan trips from the convenience of your computer, via Windows Live Local, and wirelessly send custom to your nüvi.

Check out a full description of MSN Direct content features, or a coverage map for MSN Direct services.

A 3-month subscription to MSN Direct is included with the device. After that, subscription fees are $49.95 per year, or $129.95 for a lifetime subscription.

Widescreen -- See More of What's Around

The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. lt offers 2d or 3D perspective views.

The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.
Wider screen lets you see more of what's around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen

3-inch screen

and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen

4.3-inch screen

Multi-Destination Routing

This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the 'Route Planning' feature lets you  save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, 'the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls.' The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about).

A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.

Where Am l?

Garmin's 'Where Am l?' feature is a useful safety feature on all nüvis, but voice recognition makes it even better.

0n any nüvi (including this one), you can just tap 'Where Am l?' to find the closest hospitals, police stations, fuel stations, nearest address and intersection. Also see your exact latitude and longitude coordinates. With the 800s, all you have to do is say 'Where am l?' to get the info.

Where's My Car?

Like the nüvi 700s, the 800s will also remember where you parked. lt automatically marks your position when you remove it from the windshield mount, so you can navigate with nüvi on foot and find your way back to your vehicle. Perfect for unfamiliar spots and crowded lots such as amusement parks, stadiums and malls.

Simply dial the phone number with the nüvi's touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. note that the 800 series is unique among nüvis, in that the 800s use microSD cards, where all other nüvis use SD cards..

Testimonials
Average Buyer Rating: out of 5 stars

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - * garmin nuvi 880 ...
I ORDERED THE NUVI 880 GPS,I THOUGH IT WAS COMING FROM AMAZON,BUT IT CAME FROM ELECTRONICA DIRECT. SO IAM VERY HAPPY WITH THE NUVI 880 GPS,BUT I HAVE A PROBLEM, I LOOKED ON AMAZON THE DAY THAT I RECEIVED THE 880 GPS AND I SAW IT FOR $739.00, SO I CALLED ELECTRONIC DIRECT TOO ASK FOR THE SALE PRICE AND THEY WOULD GIVE ME $15.00, AND MAY-BE ANOTHER $36.00 CREDIT. BUT I PAID $799.99. THEY WOULD'NT GIVE ME THE SALES PRICE.(I DON'T WANT TOO DEAL WITH ELECTRONIC DIRECT ANY MORE. BUT I WILL SHOP AMAZON.COM--------THANK YOU VERY MUCH, JENNIS H. DANIELS--

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - Good GPS, but some issues found
I purchased this unit because I wanted the MSN Direct link with updated information, traffic, etc as well as the ability to 'talk' to the GPS while driving and these features work great. Where I find my greatest disappintment is with the advanced waring of upcoming turns or exits on the highways. I have found several times the information spoken is not correct and it comes much too late to make any changes. What I mean by this is the unit tald me to stay to the left for an exit, but once we got to 20 feet before the actual exit it said to exit on the right. I also feel the announcements for turns should be given with greater distance from the turn or exit. It seems that you are always at the intersection or exit before it lets you know "This is where you turn or exit". I wish Garmin would make it announce with a little more time or distance from the turn or exit. I hope I have said this enough. Overall the rest of system seems to work well. (I was told by a friend as a comparison the 660 calculates routes much faster than the 880) I hope Garmin comes up with a firmware update to change the announcment distance to give you time to react.

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - * Good, but not great ...
I got the Nuvi 880 for my new vehicle. I decided that off-the-shelf solution was cheaper than factory installed. In my previous car (a Mazda3) I was using the factory installed navigation system.

I got the Nuvi 880 primarily for the voice recognition feature.

I find though that my Mazda navigation was smarter and more user-friendly than the Nuvi 880, even though it didn't have voice recognition.

VR works well. You need to turn down the radio though so that it can understand you. There is a small library of words that it understands. But for me, VR is well worth it because the unit is placed well forward of the dash, out of reach for me. One gripe though is that when you ask to spell the location or category, it gives you a keyboard to type, and you can't 'say' the letters. That is really annoying for a unit that's supposed to be accessible via the voice commands.

The MSN feature is ok. You can get weather info, movie times, and traffic updates. Though I don't think I will be continuing after the free subscription period expires.

One thing to note is that there is an annoying 'clicking' sound after you pair the unit with a bluetooth phone. Don't know how to get rid of it.

Another thing I don't like about the 880 is that it's not as smart as my previous nav system. For example, I recently entered a request to go to Six Flags Hurricane Harbor in Jackson, NJ from Rockland County (NY). The google route takes you down the Garden State Parkyway, to I95, then to I195. Highway all the way, for a total trip time of 92.1 mi - about 1 hour 41 mins. The 880 decided to make the route: GSP to RT9 thru Freehold NJ then to Monmouth Rd. The trip distance is definitely shorter 80.0 mi, but it was a much longer trip time with all the stop lights I had to go through. When I realized the error, there was no way to get back to the highway. I wish there was a way to program the route like my old nav system (eg., stay on highways, etc).

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - Nuvi 880
Garmin nüvi 880 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator

This is my first GPS and overall, am enjoying it and have found it to be a great tool, especially in metro areas. I enjoy the features of MSN Direct as well. I purchased this unit in mid-July directly from Amazon. I tend to like more fully featured units as I appreciate technology. I was willing to pay more for this unit (versus the 850 for example) to try out the extra features.

I used the unit locally (smaller city west of Grand Rapids, MI) for a week or so before I took it out of state to Virginia for a family trip so that I would gain a decent understanding of its abilities and features by seeing how it would route me to work and other known points before trying it in a larger, unknown metro area. The unit was a real help, even within the Norfolk Naval Base.

Some frustrations:
Unit needed to be "reset" twice already. Once it simply locked up and the other, although it recognized and added the remote, it would not allow it to function. I followed all the instructions, new remote battery - no help. Reseting (removed GPS battery) cleared both issues.

Internal speakers are difficult to hear and people on the receiving end mention the clarity of my voice is not all that great thru the bluetooth connection. This is true even with no radio, no fan motor, no passengers talking, etc) Like another reviewer, I am also hard of hearing and found that using the FM option does not help much for a variety of reasons. Have to really turn up the volume on the radio to even hear the nuvi and quality was not consistent. Thank you for the tip of plugging into the AUX jack, which I have on my 2008 CRV - I will definitely try that. One thing that has helped with the sound issue it that, after experimenting a bit, I am able to locate the unit on my windshield next to and at the same level as the rearview mirror. This gets the unit as close to me as possible and gives me a clear line of sight. One learning point - on some cars, the "dot patterns" on the windshield around the rearview mirror on some cars are printed on the inside surface which the suction mount will not stick to - so you have to position the unit lower and farther away. On my car, I eventually found out that the dots are within the glass which allowed me to better position the unit as mentioned above.

WebUpdater - I am a Mac user and had to spend quite a bit of time getting the software to recognize/find my unit. I tried using a Dell laptop as well but got the same result except that it kept telling me that I might have to change an interface setting (somewhere/somehow) to "Garmin" or "Host" which I was not anxious to experiment with. Garmin does tell you that you might have to update the software on older models (which I did not expect the brand new 880 to be !!!) before WebUpdater will work. Unfortunately, they don't tell you your options for doing such - you have to nose around. After several hours, I was able to find and get thru a back door by going thru the "Additional Software" section on the Garmin website and found a link specific to the 880 to update the software. Once I updated the software to version 3.00 (from 2.50 as received), I connected my nuvi back to my Mac and everything now works fine. Better instructions would have saved hours here.

I am also a little surprised on how long it takes for the unit to find a sat signal. Not sure of other brands performance in this area though.

Not sure if any make or model would do better but when in situations where one turn or instruction needs to be followed quickly with another instruction (to turn again in a short distance or stay left for example), I found that the unit would sometimes be giving the second instruction after I already had to execute the move. Other times, traveling the same route, it gave both instructions right up front so that you knew that you had to pay extra attention.

Note to Judy - I also experienced the same "unit already registered" problem. There are multiple codes in the battery compartment of the unit that are "8 or 9 characters long". I got the same message using one number and then was successful using the number directly under the barcode. You think that maybe they could be a little more specific in the instructions on where to find the right code ???!!!

Overall a very helpful unit and would recommend to anyone. The 850 might be the better and less expensive choice for most.

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - * Great GPS!!! ........unfortunately poor customer service ...
After having used several GPS products Garmin has really outdone themselves on this
one. The voice recognition has preformed almost flawlessly. Any faults I
can attribute to myself by trying to give too much information when searching
for places. The less spoken the better. I have a tendancy to provide too
much detail for the query, which causes it to think too long. Again I count
this as user error. You learn very quickly the ease of use with Nuvi 880 is
a very natural progression. I wouold highly reccomend this to anyone
looking for the best.
I did find pricing a little less on other web sites but chose
Amazon.com thinking if If I had any issues they would correct them.
Unfortunately, they did not stock the unit as is the case
on many items and when I had some minor issues with the purchase
regarding shipping charges, open box etc. Electronica Direct the seller
used by Amazon did not respond to my concerns and were somewhat arrogant

Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, the eighth Pokémon movie, ranks as one of the best features in this popular franchise. Director Kunihiko Yuyama and writer Hideki Sonoda sensibly keep the adventures and threats to a scale that's appropriate for the characters. (The first movies put the world at risk, and while Ash Ketchum is a good kid, he's not someone who can credibly save the planet.) Ash, Brock, Max, and May journey to Cameron Palace for a tournament that celebrates the valor of Prince Aaron, who saved the realm from destruction 1,000 years ago. Ash and Pikachu win, but the mischievous Mew kidnaps Pikachu, whom he's befriended. Prince Aaron's Pokémon companion Lucario awakens from the victor's staff to lead Ash and the gang to the Tree of Beginning, a mountain that is also a living entity. Ash risks his life to rescue Pikachu, proving the depth of their friendship to Lucario. The film includes lots of CG effects, most of which work well with the drawn animation: the earlier Pokémon films tended to look like two different movies spliced together.

The two-disc set also includes The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon: A 10th Anniversary Special. In this 40-minute adventure, Dr. Yung invites Misty and Ash to take part in a special tournament on his new battle system. Yung creates formidable Mirage Pokémon from raw data, culminating in a super-version of Mewtwo, the powerful psychic Pokémon from the first features. Once again, friendship and kindness triumph over greed and arrogance, although the special ends with the words, "To be continued..." A CD is always more compelling when you know it's lifted from the artist's autobiography, and that's certainly the case with Confession, Usher's first record since 2001's 8701. The Atlanta singer's string of hits over the past decade have been decidedly PG-13 rated, almost veering towards teen pop, but he's changed all that on this co-produced offering, which he claims is "the real him." It would be too simplistic to just brand this record a break-up record, chronicling his public split with TLC's Rozonda "Chili" Thomas; it is that, but so much more. It would be more accurate to call this Usher's coming of age record, bridging the gap from boy to man, as he navigates the emotional fallout from the disintegration of his relationship, and the events that led up to it--real or imagined. But other than a guilty conscience, it seems unclear why Usher feels compelled to disgorge his secret life, as he documents his infidelities, transgressions, and emotional perfidy in the album's prodigious twenty one songs, that range from insinuating sultry R&B grooves to the decidedly crunky "Yeah," which pairs an insistent keyboard romp with Lil' Jon's assertive beats, and Ludacris' rather humid rhymes. --Jaan Uhelszki

Fade to Black is a document of Jay-Z’s self-proclaimed final concert; a grand affair that took place before a sold-out crowd at New York’s Madison Square Garden in November 2003. (But anyone who follows celebrity news knows that Jay-Z was out of retirement and back performing at the Garden just a year later.) Fade to Black is a legitimately powerful record of a truly historic event in the annals of rap. Muttering offhand narration with typical bored, streetwise affect, Jay hails the concert as a momentous occasion for being the first time a hip-hop show was allowed to headline at the Garden.

It’s unlikely that the full impact of the live performances will hit home to viewers unfamiliar with Jay-Z and his Roc-A-Fella Records stable of artists. Another frustration is trying to identify the array of visitors who trade raps on Jay’s stage. Included in the star-studded lineup are Missy Elliott, Foxy Brown, Pharell, Ghostface Killah, Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, and R. Kelly. One unmistakable figure--and we do mean figure--is Jay’s squeeze Beyonce, who raises the temperature and the roof with her skimpy outfit, flowing hair, soulful yowl, and sexed-up dance routine that leaves her boyfriend and the whole of Madison Square Garden slack-jawed with animal desire.

Twenty cameras captured the event, and some of the most powerful sequences are sweeping moves across the swirling, blissed-out masses as they lip sync along in perfect unison with Jay-Z’s complex, profane, quick-witted raps. Less effective are intermittent cutaway segments that show the artist in various studio settings working up beats and rhymes. These amateurish home video breaks may give some insight to Jay’s perfectionism and dedication to his craft, but they detract from the visceral power of the beautifully executed performance footage. --Ted Fry

On his third studio effort (and fourth overall), 22-year-old R&B/pop star Usher Raymond makes the not-so-simple transition from post-teen heartthrob to love man. He does it with solid songs and a generous helping of charisma and vocal acumen, making this much-delayed collection a hot summer treat. Usher is aided in his musical efforts by renowned hit-makers like the Neptunes, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (who deliver soaring ballads like "Can U Help Me"), Jermaine Dupri, and new jack Edmund Clement who penned the irresistible single "U Remind Me." With catchy tracks and emotive vocals, Usher revs up his sex quotient and unleashes a winning blend of street-honed jams and passionate love songs. --Amy Linden
