The Humminbird Matrix 97 Sonar and GPS Combo is an all-in-one fishfinder for the recreational angler that offers incredible ease of use and GPS chartplotting with built-in UniMap. This little helper may be small, but has huge built-in capabilities, plus the ability to add powerful, advanced accessories, making it the perfect companion for your fishing outings.

The full-featured Matrix 97 Combo has an internal, 16-channel WAAS GPS receiver with omni-directional antenna for higher performance, and a built-in, four-nautical- mile-resolution UniMap of USA inland lakes, rivers and coastal areas that puts you on top of the hot spots. This unit utilizes DualBeam PLUS sonar that is selectable between 20- or 60-degree beams, or simultaneous operation to deliver wide coverage and better bottom definition that reaches a depth of up to 1,500 feet. While ideal for small spaces, the Matrix 97 Combo is big in performance, with real-time sonar that instantly captures the action under your boat at up to 40 times per second, and Sonar Echo Enhancement so sensitive it can track a jig to over 40 feet! All the information you need is displayed on a brilliant, 5.6-inch LCD screen with 240x320 lines and in 256-color TFT that is sunlight viewable. This fishfinder has a high-speed, micro-dynamic transducer for optimum performance that is reliable up to 70 mph, and even includes water temperature and GPS speed. The Matrix 97 Combo also has full GPS trackplotting capability to show position, mark hotspots and easily find your way home, as well as PC-connection capability to save and manage waypoints and upgrade internal software. The GPS unit has a full-screen trackplotter and a 3D track and split-screen sonar track with an adjustable split. Easy to use, this fishfinder includes advanced upgrades that are plug-and-play compatible, from the GPS receiver, to the SmartCast wireless sonar link and PC connection accessories.

The Matrix 97 Combo features programmable view presets that access important screens with a single touch, one-touch zoom with 2x, 4x, 6x and 8x zoom levels, and TripLog with distance, elapsed time, and average speed. This fishfinder has both fresh and saltwater set-up options for optimal performance in any environment, and allows for both totally automatic, or totally manual operation with upper and lower range control. This system also features a selectable large, easy-to-read digital readout with a backlight for night fishing, adjustable chart speed, and a memory that retains your settings, as well as alarms for depth, fish, and battery life. The Matrix 97 Combo includes an adjustable chart speed, an instant image update that immediately shows results of settings changes for accurate fine tuning, and a freeze-frame that pauses the sonar scroll for detailed screen inspection. As an added convenience, this finder is ultra-compact in size, with an easy-on, easy-off one-button mounting system that allows it to go almost anywhere. The Matrix 97 Combo runs on 10-20 volts of DC power, providing 500 watts RMS output and 4,000 watts of peak-to-peak output. This unit operates between the 200kHz (20-degrees at -10db) and 83kHz (60-degrees at -10db) frequencies, and has a target separation of 2.5 inches to reveal close-hanging fish. The GPS unit on this system includes 750 waypoints, 20 routes, and 10 tracks with 2,000 points each. The Matrix 97 Combo comes as a Transom Mount with a tilt-and-swivel quick-disconnect mount system, for either Gimbal or in-dash mounting, and measures 9.75 x 7.25 x 3.5 inches (WxHxD) as a gimbal mount, or 8.875 x 6.75 x 1.5 (WxHxD) when in-dash mounted with three inches of behind-dash clearance. It's a measure of the ongoing popularity of Karen and Richard Carpenter that the 2002 release of this video collection in DVD format comes nearly 20 years after Karen's death. With straightforward, unobtrusive style, director Bruce Beresford draws fine performances from Brosnan, Julianna Margulies (as a barmaid who inspires Desmond's sobriety), and especially young Sophie Vavasseur in the title role as Desmond's bright, determined daughter. Few would accuse Fantasia of a reluctance to abide by the wisdom that what you've got, you should flaunt, and the vocal gusto she slathers over her full-length debut gets partial credit for earning--and keeping--your attention. To a greater extent, though, the high-wattage help heaped over the Idol 3 champ and Patti LaBelle-sound-alike makes the disc dazzle. In addition to pitch-ins from Missy Elliott, who produced and co-wrote three tracks and busts out a two-snaps-up rhyme on "Selfish (I Want U 2 Myself)," Jazze Pha duets on the ultra-mod "Don't Act Right" and Jermaine Dupri wrote and produced the smolderer "Got Me Waiting." Surprisingly, though, it's not those tracks or even the Idol-propelled cover of the Gershwins' "Summertime" that will stick with listeners most. Instead, first single "Truth Is," a sweet, old-school R&B lament directed toward a lost love, and "Baby Mama," a spirited shout-out to hard-working single mothers, snare standout status with their from-the-gut authenticity. Keeping it real is what won Fantasia the hearts of millions on TV, and despite Free Yourself's likable slickness, it convinces that--hot commodity or no--she's not about to forget it. -Tammy La Gorce
