Which Dock ls for You?
JBL's been in the iPod dock business for awhile, so it's no surprise that the company has crafted enough models to keep up with an ever-increasing army of iPod owners. Which one is right for you? Well, that depends what kind of pod person you are:

For the Power Hungry
For those who seek more volume, the 0n Stage 400lD should be your first stop. At 2x15 Watts, it's the loudest and largest of the bunch, and features an Atlas woofer for added bass. But size isn't everything--the 0n Stage Micro boasts the same wattage rating without the woofer.

For the Weekend Warriors
Those who need a dock that they can take anywhere should investigate docks that can be powered by batteries. The 0n Stage Micro runs on four AAAs, whereas the 0n Stage lllP and 0n Stage lll run on six. Take your music to the beach, on camping trips--wherever you can't bear to be without it.

For the iPhone Techies
The iPhone owner--if you can stand to put the thing down--has a couple choices. The 0n Stage lllP provides a smaller and more portable option, or the 0n Stage 200lD gives a bit more power. These two docks support all docking iPod models as well.

For the Featurephiles or Heavy Sleepers
Some of us just aren't content with basic functionality; we need more buttons, more lights. 0thers just need a little nudge to wake up in the morning. lf this is you, then the 0n Time 200lD and 400lHD are for you. Both feature an alarm clock and AM/FM radio, with the ability to wake up to your favorite song stored on your iPod (and then reject it with the snooze button). 0f course, for the masochists, a classic buzzer is also available. The 0n Time 400lHD adds a dual alarm clock and HD radio to the mix, for a crystal-clear signal and a variety of text-based information (artist name, song title, weather alerts, school closings, etc.) scrolled across your screen.

Something for Everyone
All of these models feature a remote control for full iPod navigation, Evercharge topology to charge iPod even when not connected to a PC or the system is turned off, a mini-jack for auxiliary devices, and the sleek design and solid performance you'd expect from JBL.

Compatibility
The JBL 0n Stage lllP system is compatible with docking versions of the iPod, including the iPod touch, iPhone, iPod classic and iPod nano G3. A stereo mini jack connection also allows you to enjoy high-quality audio from a variety of other devices, such as MP3 and CD players, desktop computers (all platforms), satellite radio, and laptops. Specific dockable iPod compatibility: iPod mini 1G; iPod nano 1G, 2G, 3G; iPod 3G, 4G, 5G, 5.5G, 6G; iPod touch; iPhone.

Easy-to-Use Music and Navigation Controls
Just a touch of the music controls increases or decreases the volume. Using the navigation controls, browse songs, playlists and photos, change tracks and settings, and more.

Connection Versatility
The JBL 0n Stage lllP loudspeaker dock is a multimedia focal point. Enjoy your iPod, view photos or videos, and listen to virtually any other auxiliary audio component, all through the JBL 0n Stage lllP system.

Additional Features
  • lR remote--The JBL 0n Stage lllP lR remote has several modes of operation. The Music mode allows you to control the volume, change tracks, fast forward, and fast reverse. The Navigation mode allows you to access menus on your mobile digital device just as if you were controlling the unit itself. You can search your music, watch your slideshows, and find and play your videos.
  • Evercharge topology--The system charges your iPod/iPhone, even when not connected to the computer or if the system is off.

Advanced Technology
The JBL 0n Stage lllP loudspeaker dock combines many proprietary technologies to provide the highest quality sound, astonishing bass, and clear and accurate sound from any direction.
  • 0dyssey transducers--The 0dyssey drivers deliver accurate high frequencies while capable of low-frequency extension of four octaves, unlike traditional powered tweeters. This design provides a full, rich frequency response, from low bass to the highest highs.
  • Slipstream port design--The port minimizes boundary layer separation, producing high-output bass with low distortion.
  • C0E (Computer-0ptimized Equalization)--The system equalization is computer-optimized to provide a rich, complete soundstage over a range of listening positions.
  • 0CT (0ptimized Compression Topology)--The proprietary compression technology ensures clean, accurate sound at high output levels.
  • AEMS (Advanced Energy Management System)--The automatic battery-saving shutoff will automatically put the system into sleep mode when there is no audio input. The system awakens with just a touch and resumes at the same volume level.
  • Battery-powered--The JBL 0n Stage lllP system uses most types of AA batteries. Six fresh AA batteries allow up to 12 hours of continuous play at normal listening levels. An amber LED flashes when the battery protection circuit senses that the batteries are low. JBL encourages the use of rechargeable batteries (e.g., NiMH), to reduce waste and help the environment.

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - * Compatible with iPhone 3G, if you get the universal dock adaptor ...
This speaker dock comes with a variety of dock adaptors. Unfortunately, you will have to provide your own adaptor to use it safely with the iPhone 3G. The universal dock adaptor is available from Apple (a package of 3 for $9.00).

I'm happy with the speaker itself. It has enough power to fill a small room. If you want to rock your whole house, you will probably be happier with a more powerful speaker.

Buyer's feedback: 1 out of 5 stars - WARNING DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! Not even worthy of ONE STAR
I bought this product over two 1/2 months ago, and it was defected. I returned it to JBL for an exchange. I had to pay for return shipment plus insurance of their defective dock. It took them two months to ship me out a new product. I called and they would give me an eta, but then push it back every two weeks. So finally I receive my product in the mail and it was the WRONG PRODUCT. It was the on Stage III not IIIP(for IPhone). So I paid close to $200.00(including the tax and the return shipping) and I don't even have the right dock. Do not buy!!!

Buyer's feedback: 2 out of 5 stars - * Not Longer Compatible ...
This was a great little speaker system until...

I recently updated my iPhone 1st generation to software version 2.1, and this speaker system is no longer compatible. When I plug it in, it now asks me if I want to go into Airplane Mode, and does not charge the phone.

Recommended, as long as you don't update your iPhone software to the latest version!

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - Good sound quality, iPhone 3G compatible
I've had previous versions of this product and find this one much improved.
- It does work with my iPhone 3G, including the charging.
- Improved sound quality.
- Battery powered (optional)

The only downgrade with respect to past versions is the remote control:
- Less intuitive buttons. Difficult to operate in the dark
- Dependent on Infrared, instead of the old RF. This means you need direct line of sight to the unit for it to work.

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - * Great sound, excellent design ...
I've owned older versions of the JBL On Stage line and this one has been the best experience yet. The sound produced from this model is great and gets loud enough without distortion to use in any environment. When you first dock an iPod or iPhone with it and begin playing, it starts out on a low volume setting so you have to turn it up each time you dock it but it keeps you from being blasted out like the older models did. I haven't bothered to use this one running on the 6 AA batteries since I've always been somewhere with AC power for it. I've only used this with the original iPhone. There are some changes Apple made to how the 3G iPhones charge that although they will play music through older devices, they'll display an error message when you first connect them. With the original iPhone this speaker worked perfectly, though.

Filmmaker Robert Zemeckis topped his breakaway hit Romancing the Stone with Back to the Future, a joyous comedy with a dazzling hook: what would it be like to meet your parents in their youth? Billed as a special-effects comedy, the imaginative film (the top box-office smash of 1985) has staying power because of the heart behind Zemeckis and Bob Gale's script. High schooler Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox, during the height of his TV success) is catapulted back to the '50s where he sees his parents in their teens, and accidentally changes the history of how Mom and Dad met. Filled with the humorous ideology of the '50s, filtered through the knowledge of the '80s (actor Ronald Reagan is president, ha!), the film comes off as a Twilight Zone episode written by Preston Sturges. Filled with memorable effects and two wonderfully off-key, perfectly cast performances: Christopher Lloyd as the crazy scientist who builds the time machine (a DeLorean luxury car) and Crispin Glover as Marty's geeky dad. --Doug Thomas

Critics and audiences didn't seem too happy with Back to the Future, Part II, the inventive, perhaps too clever sequel. Director Zemeckis and cast bent over backwards to add layers of time-travel complication, and while it surely exercises the brain it isn't necessarily funny in the same way that its predecessor was. It's well worth a visit, though, just to appreciate the imagination that went into it, particularly in a finale that has Marty watching his own actions from the first film. --Tom Keogh

Shot back-to-back with the second chapter in the trilogy, Back to the Future, Part III is less hectic than that film and has the same sweet spirit of the first, albeit in a whole new setting. This time, Marty ends up in the Old West of 1885, trying to prevent the death of mad scientist Christopher Lloyd at the hands of gunman Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson, who had a recurring role as the bully Biff). Director Zemeckis successfully blends exciting special effects with the traditions of a Western and comes up with something original and fun. --Tom Keogh

Set in a frontier world of bonnets and one-room schoolhouses, Love's Enduring Promise follows a headstrong young teacher named Missie (January Jones, Bandits), the daughter of Clark and Marty Davis (Dale Midkiff and Katherine Heigl) from previous prairie romance Love Comes Softly. After Clark injures himself in a woodcutting accident, the family farm is in danger of failing--until a handsome young stranger (Logan Bartholomew) helps out. Missie finds herself drawn to this man, but the intelligence and graciousness of young railroad magnate (Mackenzie Austin, How to Deal) appeals to a side of her that yearns to go beyond the hills and valleys of her childhood. What could be romantic froth becomes a quiet, well-paced, and thoughtful love story, thanks to a solid script, capable performances, and clean direction. Jones is particularly engaging; Missie could have been blandly virtuous, but Jones draws a rich and subtle range of emotions out of her scenes. Religious viewers will appreciate the movie's commitment to wholesome storytelling and clear moral perspective. Love's Enduring Promise, like Love Comes Softly, is based on a novel by Christian writer Janet Oke, though Love's Enduring Promise departs more from its source. --Bret Fetzer

What sounds like the high-concept romantic comedy pitch from hell--widower president falls for smart lobbyist while the world watches--is actually intelligent, charming, touching, and quite funny. Granted, it's wish fulfillment all the way (when was the last time you saw a president who was truly presidential?), but in the capable hands of writer Aaron Sorkin (TV's Sports Night) and director Rob Reiner, The American President is incredibly enjoyable entertainment with quite a few ideas about both romance and the government. Michael Douglas stars as the president, who after three years in office starts thinking about the possibility of dating. When he auspiciously encounters cutthroat environmental lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Bening), sparks begin to crackle and the two begin a tentative but heartfelt romance. Of course, his job gets in the way--their first kiss is interrupted by a Libyan bombing--but darn it if these two kids aren't going to try and make it work! However, they hadn't counted on the president's Republican antagonist (Richard Dreyfuss), who starts carping about family values. The predictable plot--Douglas finally goes to bat for his lady and his country--is leavened by Sorkin's wonderful, snappy dialogue and a light touch from the usually subtle-as-a-sledgehammer Reiner. Both manage to create a believable White House-office atmosphere (with a crack staff including Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox, Anna Deavere Smith, and Samantha Mathis) as well as a plausible and funny dating scenario. The true success of the movie, though, rides squarely on Douglas and Bening; this is unequivocally Douglas's best comedic performance (ergo his best performance, period) and Bening, usually such a good bad girl, takes a standard career-woman role and fleshes it out magnificently. You can see in an instant why Douglas would fall for her. One of the best unsung romantic comedies of the '90s. --Mark Englehart

The tagline emblazoned across the top of this latest WWF album's cover reads, "All New WWF Superstar Themes That Rock!" And on any compilation where songs by Limp Bizkit and Marilyn Manson are unremarkable for their fast pace and fury, it can be safely said that all of the songs do "rock!" Careful work has gone into matching songs to the performers, and the opportunity to listen to this album outside the context of WWF shows means that a fan can live the fantasy any time he chooses, all day long. Even Vince McMahon's theme strengthens the role he plays in the WWF's plot: Dope's "No Chance" talks in the first person about a stupidly angry boss, and connecting McMahon with this song is smart because everybody hates their boss on some level, and this song only reminds the listener of McMahon's part in the drama. Along with "No Chance," some of the other numbers on Forceable Entry are new covers or remixes of wrestlers' theme songs. Here, this generally means a new version with dirtier guitar work throughout it. This will only bother the listener if he was really attached to the original version of one of the themes, such as Chris Jericho's "Break the Walls Down" (Sevendust), or Undertaker's "Rollin'" (Limp Bizkit). Regardless, if you know the songs played upon the entrance of these wrestlers, then you know which themes you like and which ones you don't--and you know whether or not you need this album. --Mark Huntsman
