* map updates, sound, battery and repeat ...
hello,
i wantto talk about 4 different points.
1. be ready to pay more on updating maps which are already at least 1 year old.
2. you might experience hardware problem like loosing sound. i can get the sound by doing configuration/diagnostic/audio test. if i try to change the sound level, i loose it all.
3. i wish it has internal battery so i can carry it around.
4. repeat the last comment is somethign you should have in any kind of gps. it is great if you miss something or if you did not understant what was told.

Piece of Junk
I bought my Magellan about a 1 ½ years ago, initially it worked great. Eventually it could no do a locate so I called the help center in (India) they were no help what so ever all they wanted is to have me send it back and pay the standard $175.00 fee to fix it. Eventually it started working again hummm weird, now the sound goes out I keep doing the diagnostic check and it will work and with in 5 minuets it will be out and you have to do it over and over again and now they want another $175.00 just to look at it sounds pretty fishy too me. My sister has one as well hers went out right at the one year mark and they again want to charge $175.00. Sounds like they have a lack of customer satisfaction skills. When it works it works great but once the problems start they don't stop you will certainly spend more fixing it than you pay for it.

* Business or Pleasure ...
I have had this unit for about a year now. It has made two errors in that entire time. I use it primarily for business and I find residences in subdivisions at night on the first pass. I think it is an excellent device and give it my highest rating.

Excellent GPS
This is a great unit for the price. I've used it locally and on several business trips and it's gotten me from point A to B with no problems. I won't leave home with out it now, money well spent.

* Hardware Failure (Loss of Sound) ...
I have had this unit for about 2 years or so, if I can remember correctly, and it was purchased new. At first things went well, except for what I thought was an atrocious response to delivering updated maps.
What has followed since has been anything but inspirational, in my opinion, about the unit I purchased new. I recently updated to map 4.26, but then found that a new map might be available within the next month. Any chance of gettin g my money back? No.
And now, my unit has no sound. The thing works but there's no voice prompts. It started having some problems and then the sound all but quit. It's not the speakers but something I understand, with the soldering. I now discover that there have been a number of reports detailing the same kind of hardware failure.
I spent $1,000 for this unit. I have a DVD player that costs l;ess than a hundred bucks and it doesn't have a soldering problem. I still have VHS players.... my father has electronics gear from the 1980s that doesn't have any problem like this. In my opinion, this is something that must stem from shoddy workmanship. In no way is this normal wear and tear. The life of this unit should not be having its last legs at this time.
Any positive reviews on how the unit operates in going from point A to point B are moot when you have spent this kind of money on a unit that now has no sound.
Now, I'm having problems where the 700 simply cuts off. I'll be driving to a location and the slightest bump may cause the unit to shut off. The cord is plugged into the lighter, and still glows green to show power. Maybe its the plug into the unit, or maybe the clip that attaches to the back has loosened. Whatever it is, the unit has failed miserably.
If you still decide to purchase it, I suggest you get some kind of extended warranty that will replace with another new unit.
