Navigator GPS Portable 3.5-Inch 3200 Maestro Magellan

0ur opinion:

-- November 13, 2007:
We've been big fans of Magellan's Maestro line since it came out in early 2006. The Maestro interface is incredibly easy to use, even for those who are not completely comfortable with electronics. At the same time, Magellan was ahead of the industry with useful innovations like multi-destination routing and pre-loaded reviews for points of interest like hotels and restaurants (from AAA). With it's 3200 and 4200 series, Magellan has improved the Maestro line giving them a SirfStar lll chipset that provides super-fast. satellite lock and making them thinner. ln fact, at .7 inches, these are -- at the time of this writing (November 2007), the thinnest portable GPS navigators available.

Distingushing between models is also fairly easy. The 3200-series navigators feature a 3.5-inch screen, while the 4200s have a 4.3-inch widescreen display. The 3200 and 4200 offer great, basic navigation with turn-by-turn spoken directions, pre-loade maps of the 48 contiguous United States, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, and 1.3 million P0ls. The 3210 and 4210, add maps for Canada and Alaska, AAA travel information (see details below) and bump you up to 6 million P0ls. The 3220 and 4220 add maps of Mexico. The top-of-the-line 3250 and 4250 add a host of other features, including text-to-speech directions that give real street names, bluetooth for hands-free phone calls, integrated traffic (with a free 3-month subscription), and voice command.

You can even touch an onscreen icon for a nearby destination, see name and address, and get an instant route. Turn by turn visual and spoken directions guide you every step of the way.

Auto re-route gets you quickly back on track whenever you make a detour or miss a turn. QuickSpell feature intelligently searches and checks spelling when you enter addresses. The 3200 offer multiple view options, including 2D, 3D, and TrueView that shows your upcoming turn using a 3D split screen. Maneuver List displays the full turn-by-turn details of your route. Testimonials

Buyer's feedback: 2 out of 5 stars - * Tinny speaker, annoying lady voice, pixel-y looking map, often confused about where I am ...
I used a Nuvi 260 for a few days before it got some bug in it so when returning it I decied to try the Magellan 3200.

Compared to the Garmin I had just returned, I hated this GPS. It has a tinny speaker which sounds cheap and is so high treble that it's hard to understand if your windows are down. The annoying lady voice got to me, she sounds like a 40 year old smoker bar maid. lol

The map display is cheap looking, like the type of resolution I saw in old windows video games. The roads aren't drawn smoothly, they look like vector graphics, which are a series of straight lines to make a curve instead of drwing a curve.

But the worst part is that it's often confused about where I am or which way I'm facing; if I miss an off ramp, it takes a while for it to notice. And sometimes it thought I was facing the opposite way than I actually was, sometimes it thinks I'm on a different street adn it will go wacky in circles until it figures out where I am.

It doesn't have as many points of interest, which are sooo valuable.
And its bigger and bulkier than the nuvi.

Finally, I really don't like the way that the miles to your next turn is a tiny number at the bottom, I refer to that often. Oh and the cigarette lighter plug has an annoying bright blue light on it that distacts me at night with it's brightness.

What I do like is that it tells you what road you are on all the time. And it lets you enter addresses with zip code or city, where as the nuvi doesn't. It does seem to pick good routes to places

Bottom line, try a gps before you buy it -- only by using it for one night will you realize you can't stand anything about it and want your old one back!

Buyer's feedback: 3 out of 5 stars - Better than nothing
My old car ('04 Honda) had DVD-based routing system. New corporate vehicle does not. While this thing is certainly better than having to print out directions every time I travel, it is still quirky. Many times, when turned on, it shows me in my driveway...even if I'm 200 miles away from home. After a few minutes, it seems to reorient itself. Has gone into a "recalculating route" loop a couple times, too. Like I said, better than nothing.

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - * Great Navigation Unit ...
I recceived the Magellan Maestro 3200 for Father's Day and it was the best gift. This unit is easy to use and simple. I would highly recommend it. My wife did a lot of research on GPS systems and this one suited our needs.

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - perfect for my need
Since i'm not gonna drive to Canada or Alaska this one is perfect
and the price....i saved 80 dollars compared with other stores
thanks Amazon!

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - * Great gift for dad's day ...
Great invention fun and easy to use. The kids enjoy looking at the map and hearing the directions. Makes driving somewhere new less stressful. Word of advice, keep a map on hand. If the areas you are in are newly built (roads, communities, etc.) the GPS will not identify and go blank screen telling you to go back to the last point. The text to speech feature is wonderful. Your eyes stay on the road while your ears hear the clear instructions. Very happy I made the purchase.

The rolling hills of Tennessee farmland, framed in lovely patchwork quilt patterns, set the stage for Dolly Parton's (of Grand Ol' Opry fame) warm childhood memories. The text comes directly from Parton's autobiographical hit country and western song of the same name. Perhaps the grammar is imperfect, but what C&W song ain't rife with grammatical errors--it's part of the vernacular. The story centers on a poor, but happy and loving, family (yes, they do exist) who find clever ways to deal with their poverty. As winter approaches, Mama sews a coat for her daughter from a box of scraps that someone has given her. Of course her classmates make fun of her for having a coat made of rags. But sticks and stones... "And although we had no money / I was rich as I could be / in my coat of many colors / that Mama made for me." That doesn't mean the child's feelings aren't hurt, or that she didn't feel angry. But the message comes through loud and clear (like Parton's voice): the child's mother has provided her with the strength to deal with other children's jeers, and family love can sometimes be enough to pull a person through.

The trend toward interactive video games—with an emphasis on "active"—is a welcome one for parents and kids alike. Play TV Baseball 3 is an updated version of the earlier version of the virtual reality game, with loads of realistic touches that will have baseball fans jumping off the sidelines and into the game. Simply plug the base into your TV or VCR, pick up the wireless bat, and play ball! Play against a friend or choose from one of 12 teams. Rules are the same as regular baseball, whether you’re at the plate, on the mound, or in the field: swing away for a home run, lay down a bunt to advance base runners, steal a base, strike out the batter with six different pitches (fastball, curve, screwball, slider, splitter, or change up), or field the ball and choose which base runner to throw out—or maybe you’ll turn a double play! Entertaining music and commentary included. Games need never be called on account of rain again! For 1 to 4 players. Six AA batteries required (not included). --Emilie Coulter

This decade-spanning compilation charts the singer-dancer-actress's transformation from rebellious teenager to sexy diva, along the way check-listing major hits like "Nasty," "Miss You Much," "What Have You Done for Me Lately?" and "Rhythm Nation." Two new tracks bookend the set, but even the older material--most of it helmed by writer-producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis--holds up remarkably well. --Courtney Kemp

Why is Janet Jackson's Janet the best Michael Jackson album since Thriller and the best Madonna album since..., well, since ever? Perhaps it's because Michael's kid sister is the only one of these three aerobic video stars with enough smarts to realize that sex, hooks, and beats are all that matter in this field of lightweight dance pop. Or perhaps it's because the sexuality Janet radiates through her sweet melodies and hip-tugging grooves is so much more credible than Michael's arrested prepubescence or Madonna's nothing-personal-just-business comeons. After her embarrassing posture as a sociocultural analyst on 1989's Rhythm Nation 1814, Janet has returned to her strength--using her odd mix of girlishness and maturity to make dance numbers about personal relationships ring exceptionally true. Even so, the 75-minute, 27-track Janet doesn't really work as an album; there's too much filler and the between-song transitions quickly grow tiresome. The album is full of killer singles, though, starting with such proven cuts as the extremely slinky "That's the Way Love Goes" and rock-guitar-driven "If," and featuring such future hits as the Prince-like "This Time," the Motown-like "Because of Love," the breathy ballad "Where Are You Now" and the inspired Stax cover, "What'll I Do. --Geoffrey Himes
$7.97

Picking up where the breakthrough funk-pop of Control left off, Janet Jackson and her production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis laced Rhythm Nation with high-minded references to societal ills--seldom the favored province of dance music, but a daring attempt nonetheless. Songs like "State of the World" and "The Knowledge" follow in the tradition of "free your mind and your ass will follow." Still, aside from the title track, it was the pure pop fare and dance music that stormed the charts: "Escapade," "Love Will Never Do (Without You)," "Alright," and "Come Back to Me" concentrate on the politics of personal relationships, not public policy, while "Black Cat" burns the place down with a fierce burst of hard rock. Rhythm Nation 1814 doesn't necessarily hang together thematically, but it's so chock full of hits, you scarcely notice. --Daniel Durchholz
