0ur opinion:

:
Mio Moov 300 features a 4.3-inch widescreen window to the world of navigation, which allows for more on-screen information. The device also incorporates text-to-speech functionality to call out actual street names when making turns, to help drivers keep their eyes on the road. These features, paired with a redesigned interface and more than 3.5 million points of interest - including restaurants, hotels and gas stations - help users find new hot spots in their neighborhoods and beyond, turning everyday driving into a daily adventure.

'From the Manufacturer (June 19, 2008)':
Get easy-to-follow voice-guided directions and access to over 3.5 million points of interest with the svelte, stylish Mio Moov 300, which features an extra-large widescreen 4.3-inch LCD for clearer text and more map on the screen. With pre-loaded maps of all 50 U.S. States and Puerto Rico, the Mio Moov 300 is ready to operate in minutes with no computer set-up required. 0ther features include 1 GB of internal memory, an SD/MMC memory card slot, and up to 2.5 hours of battery life.

Never miss a turn with 3D indicators and clear voice turn-by-turn guidance.
The Mio Moov 300 sports a 4.3-inch, square-shaped display (480 x 272-pixel resolution) with a bright, anti-glare screen for easy viewing in any environment. All the controls, buttons and menus accessed via the touchscreen have been optimized for ease of use and fast access to the features you use the most. lf you know the address of your destination, you can use the software's address-entry wizard and its on-screen keyboard. You can also use the Multi-stop Trip Planner function if you're running several errands. The Moov 300 allows you to save up to 200 destinations in a favorites list for easy access to your most visited addresses and points of interest.

While most GPS devices will alert you that you are 'about to turn left in 100 yards,' the Moov 300 goes a step further and includes an advanced Text-to-Speech feature that reads the actual street name as your next turn approaches--enabling you to spend more time watching the road and less concentration on the GPS screen.

Mio Moov devices feature the new SiRFlnstantFixll GPS receiver, which deliver faster GPS signal locks so you can begin navigating as soon as you're ready to drive. The SiRFlnstantFixll chip can find and lock a GPS signal in as few as five seconds during typical device start-ups, almost half a minute faster than other GPS devices. For users in cities where tall buildings can impede GPS signals--creating 'urban canyons'--a fast signal requisition can be the difference between missing a turn and arriving on-time.

0ther features include:
  • With over 3.5 million points of interest, it's easy to find restaurants, gas stations, emergency assistance, hotels and more.
  • United States street-level maps are pre-loaded on the 1 GB internal memory

With TMC real-time alerts, you'll be warned early of trouble spots up ahead and get suggestions for routes around the obstruction. While you can add this service to the Moov 300, the Mio Moov 310 comes equipped with TMC right out of the box.

Buyer's feedback: 2 out of 5 stars - * Move Over - MOOV300! ...
I purchased this unit today as a gift for my daughter. I had an older model Mio a couple of years ago. In total I've used Garmin and Magellan units and lean toward the Garmins. What got me to pick up the Mio was the $170 price tag and text to speech. Plus, it has a larger screen than most. That's really where the good news ends! I have 3 big problems with the unit: 1) it is extremly difficult to see in sunlight; 2) while the text is sharp, it's extremly small; 3) it took an absolutely ridiclous route to my home, (took me onto a circular road that dumped out onto the road it had me turn off of!) No, I think Mio has more to learn about GPS than what this unit brings to the market. I'll have to spend a little more and get her a Garmin

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - Very easy to use
This is my fifth GPS. I pick up this gem not knowing what to expect. After the Navicon 5100, this is a joy to use. There were two time that the directions given were "unusual" but not inaccurate. We got to our destination at about the same amount of time, it just wasn't the route I would have taken or thought of taken. But that was just two times out of hundreds so far. The POI menu is outstanding; more categories than you can shake a stick at. Also there are so many different ways to search. I'm never at a loss to find something when I'm in a strange city or town. I also like that I'm able to pick what voice is being used. I have mine set to British Female. It's crystal clear and there is plenty of volume. I can also tune the volume up or down. The Mio Moov is absolutely an entry level GPS, but so is the price. I would definitely recommend the Mio Moov 300.

Buyer's feedback: 3 out of 5 stars - * Simple as Mio but not so professional as Garmin or Tom Tom ...
I bought it and used it in CA. I got two errors searching after Walmart near SF and also trying to find a specific PoI in LA. I'm not so sure if this is because the map or the product itself.
It is also slow when you search through the menu or type an address.

Buyer's feedback: 1 out of 5 stars - Traffic Reports NOT Available At All (Aug '08)
I just got off the phone with Mio, as I tried to learn how to turn on the "optional" traffic report service I was told (by the salesman in the store where I bought it) I would have to buy a subscription to.

Mio says "The model 300 does not have the hardware built in for receiving traffic reports... but that feature will be available in the future."

No date was given. But I was told that the Moov 310 has traffic reports built in.

If you want a unit that adjusts to traffic conditions, do NOT buy the Moov 300. (I am now taking mine back to Radio Shack.)

Buyer's feedback: 2 out of 5 stars - * Good beginnner GPS for local travel ...
I purchased this unit to use on the road. I have been using a GPS system for about 4 years. I have one built in to my Jeep, have been renting from Hertz when traveling. Decided I would purchase a unit to save the rental fee everytime.

Pros
The unit is able to locate satellites very quickly. The street name announcements are great. The tracking is quite reliable.

Cons
System does not include airports as a POI. I was unable to locate an airport unless I knew the terminal name, not just the city or airport name (ex: can't find Phoenix airport or Phoenix Sky Harbor airport). It could however if the terminal had a name, such as Barry Goldwater Terminal 4. The chances are remote a traveler would know that level of details about an airport. I contacted tech support, below is their response.
Hello, because there are over 120 million poi's in the US alone and not all can be listed. And our map supplier decides which goes into your maps. There is a POI loader that will be coming out soon and will be announced on our website. This POI loader will allow you to look up anything you want and save it to your PC then transfer to a SD card for your device.

I find this to be crazy and not of much use. So I returned the unit after 2 days and purchased a Garmin Nuvi 360.

Hope this helps.

Usually we're fans of Logitech's gaming mice, but its highest-end G9 Laser Mouse is expensive, overly complex, and lacks the ergonomic thought we've come to expect. If you like to brag about dot-per-inch limits, perhaps the G9's 3,200dpi laser will be enough to sell you, but for the price, we expect the design to match.

While compact and convenient, Panasonic's SD-based SDR-S150 camcorder doesn't make the quality cut.

Stephen Sondheim's Victorian horror thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is generally considered his greatest work, macabre but darkly humorous with a viscerally powerful score that has found a home both on Broadway and in opera houses. George Hearn (who replaced Len Cariou of the original Broadway cast) plays the title character, a wronged man whose lust for revenge drives him to murder (an 18th-century legend who has been traced to a real-life barber), and Angela Lansbury plays his partner in crime, Mrs. Lovett, who finds a practical business use for Todd's victims. This combination of horror and humor is echoed in Sondheim's score: brooding menace ("The Ballad of Sweeney Todd," "My Friend"), achingly beautiful ballads ("Johanna," "Not While I'm Around"), clever puns ("A Little Priest"), coloratura arias ("Green Finch and Linnet Bird"), and intricate choral and ensemble numbers.

Continuing a fortuitous tradition of capturing the Sondheim legacy on video recordings, this performance was filmed before a live audience in Los Angeles during the 1982 national tour. Almost 20 years later, Hearn returned to the role opposite Patti LuPone in an acclaimed concert production. But Sweeney Todd is an especially compelling experience in this 1982 version, complete with the clever staging tricks (e.g., the barber's chair) and as close to the original cast as we're likely to see. --David Horiuchi

A guilty, guilty pleasure, perhaps not one a left-wing feminist should be admitting to in public. Female boomers should recall yearly TV reruns of this Rodgers and Hammerstein production, featuring such delights as "Impossible" and "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful?" It may appear a bit stark to younger viewers, but part of the charm of this 1964 network TV special, a remake of the live 1957 telecast originally built around Julie Andrews, is its utter simplicity. An extremely young Lesley Ann Warren and Stuart Damon (of General Hospital fame) are joined by Ginger Rogers, Walter Pidgeon, and Celeste Holm. Warren is all sweetness and innocence without a hint of saccharine artificiality, while Damon is a clear-eyed romantic. This very handsome love story is a bit of an oddity, but worth owning just for the memorable score. --Rochelle O'Gorman

John Waters made his bid for PG respectability with this enjoyably trashy comedy about the racial integration of a teen dance show on Baltimore television in the early '60s. Waters, as always, makes a virtue of junk culture and the powerful emotional forces it can represent as kids vie to get on the show. Meanwhile, a parade of former stars (Pia Zadora, Debbie Harry, Sonny Bono) and pseudostars (Divine, Ricki Lake) cross the screen, playing freakish characters absorbed by thoughts of fame. (Waters himself turns up as a weirdo psychiatrist.) This transitional film for Waters is rough going at times and not as interesting or funny as his later features Cry-Baby and Serial Mom, but it's worth a look. --Tom Keogh

Martina McBride has long been a champion of music as social consciousness, particularly for abused women ("Independence Day") and children. On Waking Up Laughing, her ninth album and the follow-up to Timeless, her platinum-selling album of country classics, she advances the theme while expanding it. While two songs explore the issue of unwed mothers (particularly the exquisite "Love Land," which closes the album), and another, "Beautiful Again," touches on child sexual abuse, her overall repertoire embraces the wholeness of family, and of standing strong together in the face of adversity and defeat. Musically, McBride has always proved to be an elegant thorn--her song selection is often inspired (and here, she co-wrote three tunes, including the skyscraping single "Anyway"), but she has tended to use her huge, ride-the-wave soprano full-tilt, without employing the subtle shadings that would make her even more emotionally resonant. On Waking Up Laughing she seems to have worked on the problem, yet in her second foray as solo producer, she still tends to gild the lily instrumentally--inflating string bridges between choruses, for example, or loading the opening country-pop track, "If I Had Your Name," with a Southern-rock guitar break, a listen-to-me fiddle showcase, a Celtic guitar intro, and a close that brings to mind George Harrison's sitar in play-it-backward mode. That said, she makes fine use of what sounds like a black female choir on the uplifting "For These Times," and wisely keeps the haunting break-up ballad "Tryin' to Find a Reason" (with Keith Urban's harmony vocals and guitar solo) lean and affecting. As McBride works to refine her pastiche of creativity, commerciality, and social awareness, she slyly takes more chances than one might think, all the while rallying old fans and making new ones. --Alanna Nash

For right-minded buyers of the reissued Muppet Christmas Carol soundtrack, the odds of disappointment are about as remote as Miss Piggy's chances with Kermit. If you loved the movie, you will love the loopy mayhem of the Muppet Brass Buskers ("Good King Wenceslas"), the cartoonish malice of the black-hearted misanthropes Marley & Marley ("Marley & Marley"), and the hope-swollen harmonies of Tiny Tim and Family ("Bless Us All"), Muppeted here to hilariously humble effect. If, on the other hand, your interest in this disc has more to do with its inclusion in the way-narrow Christmas-record-for-kids category--if the spirit of the season doesn't extend, for you, to the magic of the Muppets--you may want to keep browsing, as it's a soundtrack first (overture, instrumentals, and all) and a Christmas CD second. That's not to suggest you're stuck with an un-fun disc should it land on your holiday stack without a prior screening, though. Miles Goodman's score sweeps and inspires, and certain tracks--"One More Sleep 'til Christmas" and "Fozziwig's Party"--are future classics. (Note to the right-minded: After a misstep on the original release, Martina McBride's version of "When Love is Gone" is back.) -Tammy La Gorce
