Hands-0n Review:

The Motorola HS850 is the company's update to their HS810 headset, one of my personal favorites. The changes made to produce the new HS850 are few, but the effect is relatively substantial. But first, let's start with what is the same.

Like the HS810, the HS850 makes use of a body design that employs a folding microphone boom. The folding microphone boom acts as the on and off switch, as well as just providing a convenient way to make the headset smaller and more pocketable when not in use. When a call comes into your phone, you can turn on and answer the phone at the same time just by unfolding the microphone boom. You can end the call and turn it off by removing the headset and re-folding it. Using the headset in this way conserves battery power, since no battery juice is wasted on standby time - time where the headset sits around waiting to be contacted by a mobile phone or other compatible device. The physical design of the HS850 and the battery savings it imparts is my favorite aspect of the Motorola HS850.

0f course you don't have to remove and turn off the headset between calls. lf the headset is already on when an inbound call comes, you will hear the ringing come through on the headset and can answer it by pressing on the main multi-function call control button. You can end the call with this same button, and adjust volume levels with the two volume buttons. lf you are using a phone that supports the Hands Free Bluetooth profile, then you can also use the call control button to reject an inbound call or redial the last number.

The HS850's audio properties are also like those of the HS810 before it. The audio quality in both directions is very clear and understandable, but sounds a bit thin. You and the party on the other end of the call will both be able to understand each other easily, it just doesn't sound as full and natural as it might with some other headsets. The HS850 makes up for this small lacking by having great resistance to wind noise, though. That makes the headset perfect for people that enjoy driving with their windows down, or those that work outside. Most headsets are very susceptible to wind noise, the HS850 bucks that trend.

And now for the new stuff. First up, a more powerful battery. The HS850 l tested managed an amazing 7 hours and 50 minutes of talk time. That is a full two thirds improvement over the older model. The truly amazing part is that this new battery life didn't come at the expense of added weight. Like the HS810 before it, the HS850 weighs only .7oz (19.9g).

The next major change perhaps sounds more important than it worked out to be in reality. The HS850 supports the newer Bluetooth v1.2 spec, whereas most headsets support v1.1 only. Motorola claims that when used with a v1.2 compatible phone (there are still relatively few available at the time l write this), the HS850 will be able to connect faster, use less battery power, and offer improved audio quality. While l can see what appears to be a slight improvement in connection speed, l haven't really noticed much of a change in battery life or audio quality.

The last major change is purely cosmetic. The new HS850 headset is blue-gray in color, like a darker version of the HS810's color. l find it more attractive than the light silver found on the HS810.

But regardless of the color, you can't go wrong with Motorola's HS850, which l consider to be perhaps the best value on the market.

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - * Motorola HS850 Bluetooth Headset ...
This head set is very good and does exactly as described.
Very easy to operate, standard transmit/receiving range and
very good features.

Buyer's feedback: 2 out of 5 stars - You get what you pay for
Basically, you get what you pay for. This is a $25 bluetooth device and it performs as such. Worked well for a couple of weeks for me before dying for good. Just sent back to Amazon for a refund and didnt bother getting a replacement. My fault for trying to be a cheepskate I guess!

Buyer's feedback: 2 out of 5 stars - * hmmm price too good to be true ...
Bought this for $20 on deal of the day. It was the one in the bulk packaging, that might have been the first clue. Didn't sound good in my ear and nobody could hear me on the other end. I had a "real" motorola from best buy that really did work. I lost it and tried to replace it with this one. BY the real thing.

Buyer's feedback: 3 out of 5 stars - OK...
I had bought a new Razr last fall, and it had a speakerphone function, but didn't come with a corded hands-free headset, which I had been used to using on my previous Nokia phones. I decided to jump in on the bluetooth wagon and this model had gotten good reviews, and was (and still is) on a great sale here on amazon.

I bought this in May. I've used it off and on, but keep finding myself going back to just using the speakerphone to be hands free.

The fit is just not good for my ear. I'd say you should "try it on" before buying, but of course you can't. If you know someone who has one, maybe ask to borrow it. As other reviewers have mentioned, it just isn't a tight fit - it's not uncomfortable that way, but I would find that turning my head sharply to talk to my kids in the back seat would send it flying.

It was super easy to connect to the Razr phone, but some people would mention that they had a hard time hearing me when I used it. I could always hear the other person.

As it happens, my mother thought she had found this model of mine - I had to travel to her house within the last few weeks and hadn't seen it since - however, when I got it in the mail, it turns out to be an H700 model instead. We've asked all over, but can't find the owner, so I'm using it for now.

It fits my ear much better and has the same or better sound quality and features (I think maybe it's just not the newest connection speed, but neither are most phones.) Personally, I would recommend it over this HS850.

This wasn't bad, and certainly was a good price, but it didn't "wow" me. Not being an experienced bluetooth owner, maybe nothing would, but I can't give it more stars.

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - * Pleased with purchase ...
The product works great and arrived in a timely manner. The volume control works well - I have not had any trouble hearing any conversations. My only complaint - and it doesn't impact the performance of the product, but the picture shows a silver/blue image and I received a black/silver one - I just thoguht that was strange, but I'm still pleased with the product overall.

It's a measure of the ongoing popularity of Karen and Richard Carpenter that the 2002 release of this video collection in DVD format comes nearly 20 years after Karen's death. The duo's heyday mostly preceded the MTV age, so this 15-song, 55-minute anthology is a bit of a visual hodgepodge, composed of still photos, footage from TV shows and concerts, promo clips, fleeting attempts at conceptual videos, and other weirdness (film of Carpenters albums being pressed on the assembly line? Hey, whatever). You'll see an array of bad haircuts and outfits and a whole lot of lip-syncing, but in the end, it's the music that counts. And the Carpenters' signature sound, with its brilliant arrangements, its lush harmonies, and Karen's exquisite alto voice, was easy-listening pop at its finest. If nothing else, Carpenters: Gold offers another chance to hear that music in all its glory. --Sam Graham

With a gentle tug at the heartstrings, Evelyn tells the true story of an imperfect father whose devotion brought much-needed change to rigid Irish law. It's a labor of love for star and coproducer Pierce Brosnan, who brings just the right touch of Everyman charm to his role as Desmond Doyle, a struggling Dublin tradesman, father of three, and chronic pub-crawler whose wife abandons their family the day after Christmas, 1953. Desmond's a loving father who's boyishly irresponsible; Irish law dictates the removal of his children to stern Catholic orphanages, and his battle for custody is aided by two lawyers (Stephen Rea, Aidan Quinn) who seize this opportunity to revolutionize the courts. With straightforward, unobtrusive style, director Bruce Beresford draws fine performances from Brosnan, Julianna Margulies (as a barmaid who inspires Desmond's sobriety), and especially young Sophie Vavasseur in the title role as Desmond's bright, determined daughter. Sentimental without being saccharine, Evelyn is simple, well made, and bursting with genuine Irish spirit. --Jeff Shannon

Few would accuse Fantasia of a reluctance to abide by the wisdom that what you've got, you should flaunt, and the vocal gusto she slathers over her full-length debut gets partial credit for earning--and keeping--your attention. To a greater extent, though, the high-wattage help heaped over the Idol 3 champ and Patti LaBelle-sound-alike makes the disc dazzle. In addition to pitch-ins from Missy Elliott, who produced and co-wrote three tracks and busts out a two-snaps-up rhyme on "Selfish (I Want U 2 Myself)," Jazze Pha duets on the ultra-mod "Don't Act Right" and Jermaine Dupri wrote and produced the smolderer "Got Me Waiting." Surprisingly, though, it's not those tracks or even the Idol-propelled cover of the Gershwins' "Summertime" that will stick with listeners most. Instead, first single "Truth Is," a sweet, old-school R&B lament directed toward a lost love, and "Baby Mama," a spirited shout-out to hard-working single mothers, snare standout status with their from-the-gut authenticity. Keeping it real is what won Fantasia the hearts of millions on TV, and despite Free Yourself's likable slickness, it convinces that--hot commodity or no--she's not about to forget it. -Tammy La Gorce
