Samsung HL-S4266W 46' DLP HDTV

:
Get the sharpest and clearest images possible from HD and standard TV and your favorite DVD movies with the 42-inch Samsung HL-S4266W DLP projection TV. This relatively lightweight TV weighs less than 62 pounds and measures just 13 inches deep, helping you to avoid sacrificing precious real estate in your home. lt has a built-in analog/digital (NTSC/ATSC) tuner, offers both HDMl and component video connections.

Samsung's DNleâ„¢
Samsung's DNleâ„¢ (click for demo) technology offers digital perfection in naturally presented, crystal-clear images that uncover even the most minute detail.

Motion 0ptimizer: The visual data are automatically broken down into signal and noise and adjusted through a combined spatial/temporal process to eliminate noise and blurring without the slightest damage to the original signal. This guarantees the viewer a picture of astounding sharpness, whether the scene is still or moving.

Contrast Enhancer: DNle has done away with the unwanted side-effects that conventional contrast enhancement can produce, such as noise boost-up and flicker by developing an algorithm that recognizes over 1 million criteria for applying contrast. lts detail contrast enhancement technology can automatically analyze up to 70,000 local images within a frame, treating the viewer to a picture rich in contrast even in the tiniest details.

Color optimizer: For each scene the color optimizer calculates the saturation of red, green, and blue in the input signal and adjusts it to the shades that the human eye accepts as natural. Even a conventional process like white tone enhancement produces more striking results when when used with DNle. The end result is a palette of vivid hues and pure white tones to satisfy the most discerning viewers eye.

Detail enhancer: Many viewers complain of the unnatural effect that conventional uniform detail enhancement produces by relying on artificial amplification of the input signal. ln contrast, DNle automatically analyzes the portion to be amplified, detecting and re-processing any noise or defect to bring the viewer a startlingly sharp and lifelike image.
DLP (which stands for Digital Light Processing) uses an optical semiconductor to recreate source material with a fidelity analog systems can't match. While other technologies lose a certain amount of light in transit, the microscopic mirrors in a DLP projection system bring more light from lamp to screen. lt also features better color uniformity over time--no burn-in, screen aging or color-shifting possible. lt's the leading display technology for products like small portable conference room projectors and professional venue entertainment systems.

This Samsung DLP television employs a Texas lnstruments DLP chip that is comprised of millions of microscopic mirrors. The DLP chip is faster than any HDTV technology, with the mirrors switching on and off 15,000 times a second to deliver a razor-sharp picture for fast moving images. lt also offers Samsung's Cinema Smooth 720p light engine, which creates an image with no visible pixel structure and accurate shading and better low-light detail for the most film-like picture. You'll get up to a 2500:1 contrast ratio with outstanding colors and deep black levels.

The Samsung Digital Natural lmage engine (DNle) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNle improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. The 3-line digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time to dramatically reduce edge image artifacts while improving transition detail. Samsung's Cinema Smooth 3:2 pull-down film mode corrects for the artificial frames created when films are converted to DVDs. The result is a clearer image without the subtle motion artifacts caused by 24-to-30 frames per second video conversion.

Samsung's 2.6-inch color wheel spins at 14,400 rpm for smooth, fast motion video, and has five color segments for more accurate colors. lt achieves film-like transitions without pixel breakup found in slower color wheel designs and slower switching LCD microdisplays. Air Bearing technology also makes it whisper quiet.

Samsung also worked closely with Microsoft to create a special Game Mode that optimizes image quality, sound and response time for more realistic video game play--with just a single touch of a button. The Game Mode enhances dark areas, sharpens the picture, speeds up the image processing response and enhances the sounds of your games.

0ther features include:
  • Picture format adjustment: Enjoy all your 4:3 aspect-ratio programming in smooth, wide-screen without black bars. Four pre-set aspect ratio modes--Normal, Wide, Zoom 1 and Zoom 2--stretch your image to fill the screen naturally.
  • Color temperature adjustment: Selectable between Cool1, Cool2, Normal Warm1, and Warm2 with on-screen display.
  • Auto volume leveler: Keeps audio volume consistent during channel changing to minimize static sound bursts.
  • Discrete lR codes: This set is equipped with discrete lR codes for use with a macro/programmable remote.
  • Closed caption: Displays dialog that can be read along with encoded broadcast TV programs and pre-recorded videos.
  • V-Chip: Enables parental control for channel and program blocking of TV programs that incorporate the rating code signal.

High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the speakers built into the TV. SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass. lt produces 10 watts of power per channel (for 20 watts total). lt offers the following connection options:
  • Component (Y/Pb/Pr): 2 inputs
  • HDMl: 2 inputs
  • Composite (RCA audio/video): 3 inputs (1 on the front)
  • S-Video: 2 inputs
  • PC: 1 D-Sub-15 input
  • PC audio: 1 input
  • RF: 1 input
  • Sound monitor output: 1
  • USB: 1

Tech Talk
HDMl is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMl supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. lt supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).

SRS TruSurround XT audio adds three new audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.
  • Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into Ã’focusÓ during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
  • TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
  • The SRS W0W feature widens the soundstage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

I SURE AM GRATEFUL I PURCHASED THE 3 YEAR SERVICE CONTRACT!

I have had this TV since December of 2006 and now have a second service call scheduled. The screen has developed black lines horizontally across the screen and has a watery quality to it. It is really evident in faces and sky pictures. It is not displaying in HD.
This is the same problem I had in November of 2006.
There is no reason for something so expensive to be of such poor quality. If this repair doesn't take hold, I will be looking for restitution.

Buyer's feedback: 1 out of 5 stars - TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE
Do NOT buy a Samsung product especially their DLP TV's. I bought the 42 inch DLP model HL_R4266W and about 6 months after the 1 yr warranty expired, my TV started displaying a left shadow on the screen. What started as a one inch shadow has become 4 inches in 3 months. A cursory google seach shows other customers with same exact problem. I wrote 3 letters to Samsung's "customer service dept" and received zero replys. I finally was able to get someone on the phone who referred me to their exceptional customer relations departments. What a joke! The rep. "assisted" me by telling me I should have purchased an extended warranty and that if the TV was defective it would have been recalled by Samsung. When I asked how many defective TV's were required to demand a recall, she did not know the answer. She did "help" me by putting my complaint on a level 2 status. Wow. I can sleep better now. This will be the last Samsung product I or anyone I know will buy as they do NOT stand behind their product.

This tv is unbelieveable, The picture is great, the hd- dlp make the picture so real. You wont go wrong buying this tv.

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - Samsung DLP (Texas Instruments DLP Technology)
I believe this was the buy of the decade for me. Picture quality is great! Watch the LCD DLP because they can't touch the motion smoothness of a true DLP. If you don't need to hang your TV on a wall get a DLP. Better picture and the cost is less.

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - *
I purchased this television after researching all my HD options. It is the perfect balance or price, size, picture, and life span (of course, anticipating a lamp change). When I purchased it in June of 2006, the price was still $1499 at most places. A couple of points:
1. Great picture IF you use HD cables. I've gotten great performance out of three video game systems (PS2, Wii, 360) and an upconverting dvd player.
2. Buy an upconverting DVD player. It is so worth it. And use an HDMI cable with it.
3. The picture might take a little adjusting, but once you get it right, I think it offers more cinematic visuals than anything I've seen.
4. The sound quality is surprisingly good.
5. I haven't had any problems with the tv (although, I must say that mine is not hooked up to any tv signal and I only use it an average of 2 hours a day for movies and games). My understanding is that a lamp change is likely, but that overall, DLP has a longer life than any other HD format.

We've covered in too much detail how it's some sort of "open season" on Vonage when it comes to VoIP patents. After dealing with ridiculous and expensive patent lawsuits from companies who failed to actually innovate in the same way Vonage did, the company was pressured by Wall Street to quickly settle the various patent lawsuits filed against the company. Of course, rather than settle matters, that simply opened the door for other companies to go searching through their patent portfolios to see if there was anything they could sue Vonage over. Indeed, following those settlements it didn't take long for AT&T to dig up a patent and sue -- which was quickly settled as well. Thought things were over? No such luck. Nortel just showed up last month to sue and it took all of about a week and a half for Vonage to settle that case as well.

The Nortel case is slightly different because Vonage actually already had a patent infringement lawsuit going against Nortel, but it wasn't really initiated by Vonage. Instead, it had been initiated by a patent holding firm that Vonage bought in 2006. The end result of the settlement doesn't involve money changing hands, but just a cross licensing agreement for the patents. So what's the big lesson that Vonage and others have learned from this? It's certainly got nothing to do with innovating. It's to hoard as many patents as possible so that you have your own nuclear stockpile for when someone else sues you. Want to know why the USPTO is overwhelmed? It's not because there aren't enough examiners (as some will claim) or that there aren't enough funds. It's because the way the system now works is that you are supposed to file patents on every tiny little advancement so you can use it to protect yourself against lawsuits from everyone else. That's not about innovation. It's about waste. In the meantime, since it's still open season at Vonage, who's going to be next? There are a ton of other patents in the VoIP space that can surely be used in a lawsuit, right?

Small and light enough for a shirt pocket, Samsung's Helix YX-M1 is a one-stop audio entertainment center with an XM radio, a digital music player, and room for 50 hours of tunes, but it comes up short on battery life.

This raw work-flow application isn't the Holy Grail many hoped it would be, but Apple Aperture 1.5 could make life easier for photographers who need to cull, retouch, and output large numbers of photographs quickly and efficiently.

There are but two kinds of people in the world: Those captivated by Baz Luhrmann's heady, postmodernist musical romp Moulin Rouge--and everybody else. Oddly, the film's initial soundtrack release may have been the project's most traditional element, marketing a slate of pop-star contributions that gave listeners a sometimes-skewed perspective on its true musical charms. This follow-up corrects much of that oversight, offering original film versions of "Sparkling Diamonds" (the lavish, Nicole Kidman-performed medley of "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" and "Material Girl"), Jim Broadbent's and Richard Roxburgh's loopy take on "Like a Virgin," as well as the lively Offenbach "Can Can" parody "The Pitch (Spectacular Spectacular)." It also pays homage to the efforts of composer Craig Armstrong, whose quietly compelling underscore often binds the film's other far-flung musical influences together, be they stately orchestral readings of Elton John's "Your Song," a dramatic arrangement for Kidman and Ewan MacGregor's original film duet of "Come What May," or his dark, melodramatic take on Queen's "The Show Must Go On." The first Moulin Rouge soundtrack collection flaunted the film's bold, cross-genre ambitions; this one chronicles its nakedly emotional heart and soul. --Jerry McCulley

It would be easy to dismiss Kelly Osbourne's musical ambitions based on 1) Her royally obnoxious behavior on the family's MTV reality series, 2) Her overly manufactured debut album, Shut Up, and 3) That voice, which up until now, sounded like cats on a chalkboard. But spare a moment for the bratty singer's follow-up effort, a remarkably faithful new-wave throwback, which generously references everyone from Duran Duran to Missing Persons. Producer Linda Perry not only effectively revives the dramatic sounds and melodies of the era but offers songs that perfectly suit Osbourne's, er, constrained vocal range. The resulting disc is full of guilty pleasures like "Uh Oh" and "Redlight," tunes that should strike a chord with anyone that still gets a thrill out of happening upon basic cable reruns of "Sixteen Candles." --Aidin Vaziri
