Testimonials

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - * Okay, Sony did a good job with this one... ...
It works...nothing less, does the job, hands down ...about time a major brand came out with a tuner/receiver box and not just another alarm clock. Unfortunately, there are only 2 form factors out there for in-home receivers; one type by Sangean, and the other by Sony. I've not tried the Sangean yet, but if it performs the basic HD (hybrid-digital) radio functionality, it should be just as good; though most people would do well with using the Sony unit given the current price.

Pros: As long as the antenna is set up in a "good" area for reception, you are good to go... no problems. It also auto-tunes the station to HD when the signal is strong enough, and goes back to standard FM when the signal is weaker (letting you hear the difference). It has an "HD-scan" and a "standard-scan" feature - very useful.

Cons: It gets verrrry "hot" - be sure the area above the box has good ventilation! Not sure if these HD units are upgradable so it could be future-proof. Also, if the unit is unplugged, it will lose the time and presets (no battery backup). If reception is lost all together (not common), you'll have to again tune back to the HD channel you were listening to (as it only returns back to the primary station's frequency).

Overall: a simple unit - turn it on and you're good. It does the job it's expected to do - nothing more, nothing less. As long as you have an amplifier/receiver with stereo RCA inputs (or an RCA to 3.5 stereo adapter cable) and good antenna placement, you will be pleased with its performance.

Buyer's feedback: 3 out of 5 stars - Does not store pre-set information.
Pre-set information is lost every time the power goes out. In Florida, this is every day in the summer and every other day in the winter. Very inconvenient and a major nuisance. However, I noticed a remarkable difference in sound when I tuned into the local classical music station. They were playing Stavinsky, picking up subtle sounds and nuances. The pre-set problem really bugs me, though.

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - * Sony HD/AM/FM Radio Tuner ...
Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio Tuner
I purchased this unit to use in NW NV because local radio reception is limited (and because there was a $50 rebate). It did not work well in NW NV with the supplied antenna. I moved it to my SE MI home where it works great. It replaces my 25+ year old Sony AM/FM tuner which is now marginal at best. It works just fine here with the supplied antenna. I have to look at the instruction manual further to find tuner adjustments as the bass played through my normal stereo system is too dominant, but overall, it was easy to set up, has been easy to use and has great sound. It also has a small footprint and was easy to pack for travel to my other home.

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - sony hd tuner
great sound easy to use and setup.
only down fall is it has no volume control.

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - * Stellar Sony tuner ...
This is one amazing tuner. The performance on regular FM is on a par with the most expensive tuners. Superb sensitivity and selectivity. The Sony locks on to the digital carrier quickly, and displays the transmitted call sign, etc. on its bright LCD screen. More on that later. The AM performance is excellent, although a bit narrow-band for my tastes.
What's not as stellar? The bright LCD screen does not dim when the power is off, the tuner 'forgets' its presets if there is a power interruption of some length, it runs hot, and the supplied FM dipole is too long by about 6". Minor stuff, and if you know what you are doing, correctable.
I am in the broadcasting industry and would seriously consider using this tuner in critical applications. It's that good!
Oh... It has a decent manual and a good remote control, too.
