:
Give your loved ones full peace of mind when you're on the mountain with the Spot Satellite Messenger. Whether you're just checking in, allowing others to track your progress, or calling for help, Spot gives you a vital line of communication with friends and family when you want it, and emergency assistance when and where you need it. Spot employs a GPS satellite network to acquire its coordinates, then sends its location to the recipient of your choice, complete with a link to Google Maps and a pre-programmed message. Unlike personal locator beacons, however, Spot does more than just call for help. The SpotChecking feature, for example, lets you notify your SpotTeam--the friends and family you've chosen as your contacts--and tell them all is well, notify them of your location, or save waypoints so you can review your route at a later date. You can also activate the SpotCasting feature to let friends and family follow your progress in real time (every 10 minutes). Anyone with access to your account information can log on and view your route, complete with virtual views provided by Google Maps. SpotCasting is a terrific feature for mountain climbers looking to celebrate their accomplishments with their loved ones.

The most important feature, however, is Spot's ability to call 911 in the event of a life-threatening or other critical emergency. 0nce activated, Spot will acquire your exact coordinates from the GPS network, and then send that location along with a distress message to a GE0S lnternational Emergency Response Center every five minutes until cancelled. The Emergency Response Center will then notify the appropriate emergency responders based on your location and personal information. Responders may include local police, the highway patrol, the Coast Guard, an embassy or consulate, or other emergency response and search-and-rescue teams. Even if Spot can't acquire its location from the GPS network, it will still attempt to send a distress signal--without your exact location--to the Emergency Response Center, which will still notify your emergency contacts of the signal and continue to monitor the network for further messages.

Spot works around the world, including in virtually all of the continental United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, and Australia, and portions of South America, Northern Africa, and Northeastern Asia. And provided you're in a good coverage area, Spot offers a 99 percent probability of sending a successful message within 20 minutes. As a result, Spot is ideal for anyone with a taste for outdoor adventures, including boaters, kayakers, sailboarders, archaeologists, skiers, climbers, pilots, business travelers, snowshoers, and just about anyone else.

Spot requires two AA lithium batteries, with a battery life of up to one year in standby mode, 14 days in SpotCasting mode, or 7 days in 911 mode. And thanks to the water-resistant housing (safe in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes), you needn't worry about using Spot in adverse conditions. Spot measures a compact 2.75 by 4.38 by 1.5 inches (W x H x D), weighs 7.37 ounces, and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Testimonials
Average Buyer Rating: out of 5 stars

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - * Highly Recommended! ...
After reading reviews, it seemed that most of the problems with the SPOT are a result of user error. At first, I had some of the same issues, like messages not getting through, tracking not working, etc., but that was a result of operator error and not the SPOT Messenger.

This product works perfectly if you use it correctly. After figuring it out, I have had zero issues with messages getting through and/or the tracking working properly. The main thing is to push the correct buttons for the correct amount of time in the correct order. Also, the unit must be outside your pack/pocket with a clear view of the sky.

I would give the unit 5 stars but it has two flaws. Fortunately, these flaws are not significant enough to keep someone from buying/using the unit. (1) The unit's printed instructions are too vague and not very good. In fact, my unit came with a hand-typed instructions addendum in addition to the manufacture's printed instructions. The hand-typed instructions were very helpful, but you still have to follow them very carefully. Obviously, SPOT realizes that the printed instructions were not good and started including the typed detailed addendum. (2) The unit's "clip" to attach it to your pack, etc, is virtually useless. The unit needs a more secure way of attaching to your pack like a case with a carabiner or more secure locking clip system. In fact, I actually temporarily lost my unit during a hike after it fell off my pack while only using the included clip. Since then, I've been using safety pins run through the little screws in the back of the unit. The screws have little rings so safety pins works well in keeping the unit secure. Supposedly, SPOT is currently developing a case for the unit with a more reliable system of securing it. I'll be happy when that happens because the safety pins are putting holes in the top of my pack.

Otherwise, I am very happy with the SPOT. Since I figured it out, the messaging and tracking work perfectly with zero problems. I highly recommend this product.

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Product
Excellent product, it works very well and has good endings. The store was 100% recommended, the product was released within the time and very well packed.

Buyer's feedback: 3 out of 5 stars - * Fair Design with LOTS of Room For Improvement ...
I've used the Spot on several trips now, and my experience has been mixed. The system of push and hold a button for "x" number of seconds is a bit confusing. When you send a signal the light above the button glows solid (instead of flashing) for 5 seconds to confirm that it was sent, but who's going to sit there staring at the device (for up to 10 minutes) to see if your message was sent properly. The belt clip is a bad joke. Don't trust it. There is a place to attach a loop/lanyard, but the plastic there is a little thin... All-in-all this device is OK, but for a device that's supposed to be relied upon to save your life in an emergency there is a LOT of room for improvement. Just be aware of its limitations, and make sure you familiarize yourself thoroughly with its operation.

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - Lets the family NOT worry
Overall even though I am just hiking in the local mountains. This device has allowed my family not to worry about me since I broadcast on top of every hour. Thankfully even though I have not had to push the 911 button, I feel at this time confident that help will be on the way if I do.

Side notes: I have read some reviews that some people had bad luck when pushing the OK button. While I did have a difficult time FIRST time and the cause was that I did not read the directions - ever since then all has been great.

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - * SPOT Satellite Messenger ...
The positions my SPOT unit E-mails are pretty accurate, usually within a few feet. A couple of times the unit indicated a successfull OK message was sent but no E-mail was generated. Being under canopy of trees seemed to block messaging.

The SPOT website very easy to use in registering the unit and setting up profiles. I signed up for the basic service, thought the extra $45/yr for continuous tracking a little pricey. I'll just push the OK button myself. The "Beta" share service on the website still has a few bugs, I hope they get it fixed, nice way to share your treks with friends.

I would recommend to anyone that does a lot of hiking/backpacking in the outdoors. As they advertise, the unit works when cell phones don't.

Diesel vehicles have nearly a 50-percent market share in Europe, thanks to tax incentives and diesel-friendly legislation across the EU. Diesels are so passé there that you can buy a BMW 730d and no one will think it odd that your luxury car burns oil. Pull up in a diesel 7-Series in America and people would leer at you like you've alighted from an amphibious vehicle reeking of saltwater and dead trout.

But now, thanks to the oft-reported combo of newly-raised CAFE standards, not-so-newly-raised gas prices, and the 50-state diesel engine, GM, Ford, and Chrysler are about to dip more than a hesitant toe into the diesel game. Chrysler offers a diesel in the Grand Cherokee, but soon all three automakers will offer diesels in their best-selling lineups of light trucks -- the Dodge Ram 1500 is expected to offer a 50-state diesel after 2009. Light trucks are being used to lead the charge since those buyers stand to gain the most with the least amount of (perceived) sacrifice.

Diesels currently have 3.2-percent of the American market. Some estimates put them at 15-percent by 2015. That's a huge leap, and diesel still has plenty of hurdles. Diesels will come with a cost premium over gasoline-engined cars. That should be easy enough to conquer -- incentives and some quick cost and longevity calculations should convince people of the benefit. The real hurdle is the nagging issue of perception. The plan will probably be to attack that with a price that makes the proposition unbeatable. Said Chrysler's director of environmental affairs, "If it's priced right, we can sell diesel here. Diesel can give you an immediate poke in fuel economy -- 20 to 40 percent. Not many technologies can deliver that today."

It's a measure of the ongoing popularity of Karen and Richard Carpenter that the 2002 release of this video collection in DVD format comes nearly 20 years after Karen's death. The duo's heyday mostly preceded the MTV age, so this 15-song, 55-minute anthology is a bit of a visual hodgepodge, composed of still photos, footage from TV shows and concerts, promo clips, fleeting attempts at conceptual videos, and other weirdness (film of Carpenters albums being pressed on the assembly line? Hey, whatever). You'll see an array of bad haircuts and outfits and a whole lot of lip-syncing, but in the end, it's the music that counts. And the Carpenters' signature sound, with its brilliant arrangements, its lush harmonies, and Karen's exquisite alto voice, was easy-listening pop at its finest. If nothing else, Carpenters: Gold offers another chance to hear that music in all its glory. --Sam Graham

With a gentle tug at the heartstrings, Evelyn tells the true story of an imperfect father whose devotion brought much-needed change to rigid Irish law. It's a labor of love for star and coproducer Pierce Brosnan, who brings just the right touch of Everyman charm to his role as Desmond Doyle, a struggling Dublin tradesman, father of three, and chronic pub-crawler whose wife abandons their family the day after Christmas, 1953. Desmond's a loving father who's boyishly irresponsible; Irish law dictates the removal of his children to stern Catholic orphanages, and his battle for custody is aided by two lawyers (Stephen Rea, Aidan Quinn) who seize this opportunity to revolutionize the courts. With straightforward, unobtrusive style, director Bruce Beresford draws fine performances from Brosnan, Julianna Margulies (as a barmaid who inspires Desmond's sobriety), and especially young Sophie Vavasseur in the title role as Desmond's bright, determined daughter. Sentimental without being saccharine, Evelyn is simple, well made, and bursting with genuine Irish spirit. --Jeff Shannon
