0ur opinion: :Since it's introduction in 1998, the Suunto Vector wristop computer has acted as the altimeter, barometer, electronic compass, and digital logbook for everyone from mountaineers to the Marines. The Vector keeps track of almost everything for you. lt is the very tiny instrument panel that could be the key to backcountry survival. This year's Vector adds degree numbers and cardinal half points to the compass bezel, allowing users to make more accurate readings in the field. The Vector's altimeter enables users to track ascent and descent rates, as well as the number of runs skied in a day. This information can be very helpful when determining if you can bag one more descent at the end of a long tour. The watch's barometer allows you to track weather changes and automatically records atmospheric pressure over 4 days in 6hr intervals. Being able to track incoming storms is key when deciding how to prepare for a day of skiing or climbing.

: For all serious outdoor activities, the Suunto Vector watch provides everything you need when hiking, climbing, back country skiing, or traveling through any tough terrain.
With a range of up to 29,500 ft, the altimeter works within all fourteen of the over-8000 meter summits in the world. Altitude difference measurement can follow vertical progress between stages, an automatic 24-hour memory stores the altitude and ascent/descent rate for every hour, and the watch also features an adjustable altitude alarm, among other memory functions. The logbook lets you record both total and cumulative vertical ascents and descents, and the number of runs you've skied while on the slopes. Total displays include altitude, vertical speed, altitude alarm, logbook, vertical difference measurement, automatic 24 hour altitude memory, temperature compensation. lts logbook capacity is 8 kB, recording intervals of 20 seconds, 1 minute, 10 minutes, and 60 minutes, with respective times 16.5 hours, 50 hours, 20 days, and 125 days.
Current barometric pressure and temperature is also displayed to help forecast weather changes. The Vector automatically records barometric data for the past four days: the first six hours in one-hour intervals, then in six-hour intervals after that. lt can also show the present sea level pressure, for greater understanding of barometric pressure at high altitudes. Total displays include sea level pressure, absolute pressure, pressure difference, pressure trend indicator, 4-day barometric memory, and temperature.
The Vector's electronic compass uses cardinal or half-cardinal points, and the North-South arrow. lt can also be set to track a specific bearing, to keep you on direction in more remote terrain. There's also a declination adjustment that lets the user correct the difference between true North and magnetic North.
When used simply as a watch, the Suunto Vector also displays the time in 12 or 24-hour format, with three daily alarms, a calendar pre-programmed through the year 2089, and a stopwatch with split time measurement and a countdown timer. The watch features an electro-luminescent backlight, and a user-replaceable battery.

* Perfect for the rain forest ...
I just returned from spending two plus weeks in the rain forest in coastal British Columbia. This watch worked perfectly. It was critical to have the thermometer altimeter and the barometer. I was able to use topographical maps and the watch to know where I was on the mountain. I was also able to leave the rock face when the barometer predicted incoming rain. This piece of equipment (far more than a watch) was critical to the success of the expedition.Suunto Vector Wrist-Top Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, and Thermometer

Unreadable within two weeks
The watch worked great for about two weeks, then became unreadable. I am in the process of returning it... so will see how their warrenty policy holds up.

* Negative display is POOR ...
As a previous reviewer has pointed out, the older Vectors utilized a positive display, with the numbers in black and the lcd background a grey color. The most recent Vector I purchased on Amazon came with the negative display, which is simply the opposite ... the numbers being grey on a black background. Since the brightness of the grey numbers cannot be increased to stand out better against the black, it makes it ridiculously difficult to read in many lighting conditions. Turning on the backlight helps, but to do that you have to hold the light button down for 2 seconds before it responds. What a pain. The functions of the watch are great, however. Just note there is a steep learning curve to understanding the buttons. A read of the manual is a must.
After purchasing the Suunto Core (Light Green), I have to admit there is no comparison really. The Core is much easier to use, easier to read, more comfortable to wear. The only disadvantage of the Core may be its durability for such a thin and lightweight housing. But so far it's held up to everything I've put it through.

Great Watch
In my opinion, for the price this is the best hiking watch around. I have been hiking and use all of the watch functions, as far as I can tell they are accurate, except the temperature when it is on my wrist, so I take it off for 15 to 20 minutes as it has been suggested and it is more in line with the temperatures in my area. I hike in 100 degree temps, and a bit higher.

* Suunto Vector ...
This is the first watch of this kind that I ever owned. I will say that once you get to know it, you will truly be amazed at the many functions that no other watch company can even come close to doing.
