Simmons Richard with Concert Aerobic An 3: Oldies the to Sweatin'

0ur opinion:

:
The third workout video in the Sweatin' to the 0ldies series follows the winning format of a lively, beginners' workout with Richard Simmons and a cheerful roomful of enthusiastic friends--many large sized--dancing to blasts from the past with a live band. This time the venue is a theme park, and the music includes get-up- and-dance favorites such as 'Gimme Some Lovin',' 'Louie, Louie,' 'Rockin' Robin,' 'Born to be Wild,' 'The Name Game,' and 'Do You Want to Dance?' The choreography is aimed at beginners: simple moves like knee lifts and cha-cha steps, always light intensity and low impact. Besides the motivating music, what makes this and all of the Sweatin' to the 0ldies videos special is how much fun everyone on screen is having. You can't help but catch their dancing fever! (36 minutes of aerobics plus warm-up, cool down, and stretch, total 58 minutes.) --Joan Price

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - * Now we're cookin'... ...
Having started my adventures in home work-out videos with Richard Simmons' Sweatin' to the Oldies, I promptly picked up this third "aerobics concert" in the "Oldies" series. This tape is considerably more difficult (and longer, at about 50 minutes) than the first Sweatin' to the Oldies, but it is still well within the grasp of a very overweight beginner like me. Like the others, it will take the viewer a few runs through to begin to get the moves down, as Richard gives pretty minimal cues. This tape begins with an easy warm up tune, followed by two easy-paced numbers to stretch and warm up the upper and lower parts of the body. Then the dancing takes off with four up-tempo dance pieces. The intensity of your work-out very much depends on the energy you put into it, and the many exercisers (of all shapes and sizes!) demonstrate a broad range of effort with which you can experiment to find the level that suits your conditioning. A slower, cool-down dance follows, and the tape concludes with a stretching sequence. I personally don't care for this stretching routine, as I prefer slower, more sustained stretching than the rhythmic stretches Richard leads. As with all the Simmons exercise videos, you musn't miss the line-up after the stretching, when his exercisors are introduced and their weight-loss accomplishments shown. It's very encouraging and the people appear to be having an enormous amount of fun! I know I certainly do!

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - Richard is the best!!!!!!!!!
Richard's workouts are very awesome, he is very incouraging and helpful. Just like most of his videos, he always has the everyday kinda person in them, all shapes and sizes, and thats a big incouragement. This video I think out of all the sweatin to the oldies, is the best, it's very energetic and makes you really sweat, but yet you feel really good after the workout, not like most that make you feel exasted! Richard is just the best! I know he is helping me through a tough time with my weight and i'm slimmin down wonderfully! Good luck to everyone and don't feel hopeless, keep it up and you'll get where you need to be!!! GODDESS BLESS!!!!!!!!

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - * What a fun and motivating workout!! ...
Believe it, this tape is super! I have several workout tapes and get so ultra bored but not with this one.

I quit worrying about catching on and following the exact moves. Mostly, I simply step, dance, trot, slow jog and pace to the terrific rhythms and songs I grew up with.

And yep, I'm sweating up a storm two thirds of the way through!

It's a joy to see "real" people working out with Richard. His silly antics and enthusiasm make me laugh and he doesn't constantly babble throughout nor does he promote his other videos like other instructors do.

I'll be 62 in 4 months. And of course, at my age, I have various health issues and injuries. However, that doesn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying dancing down memory lane in time to this terrific and motivating tape!

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - I always come back to this one
I'm actually just 22 yrs old, but I have struggled with my weight all of my life and everyday of it. My appreciation for Richard Simmons began when I was a young child. My mom loves him and when the original Sweatin to the oldies came about, she and her sisters passed it around. I always ended up "sweatin" along with my mom whenever she'd do it, but not to lose weight, just to have fun. Finally in junior high I began to realize I needed to make a serious change and I began doing Richard's tapes almost every night. Midway thru highschool, I had dropped almost 60 pounds and I credit him with a lot of my success. This specific video is tops. I don't like "Sweatin" 2 very much for whatever reason and the first one got old a long time ago, but somehow it stands that this one is a keeper for me. My favorite ditty is "I get around"...it's actually surprisingly vigorous for Richard! Because these videos aren't overloaded with tough moves, it's easier to do them daily, which to me is the healhiest idea. Light-moderate exercise each day until the weight comes off! GOOD LUCK!

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - * this is the best workout ...
i bought this tape last summer and loved the music and the dance moves. After a year and 60 lbs lighter I thought I was too advanced to continuee to work with this tape. I was running 1/2 marathons and doing step aerobics. A friend at work wanted help getting started on working out so I gave him this tape he loves it and does it several times a week. Now that fall is almost upon us I have been feeling less motivated I miss my tape, so I just ordered another one for myself. This tape is great for days you dont want to work out because it starts out kind of slow but you end up sweating alot by the time your through. The music makes me feel good and the dance moves and Richard make me smile. I am always in a good mood after doing this tape. The cool down song is - All the Leaves are Brown and the Sky is Gray, I have always loved and can't think of a better song to end the tape with and cool down to.
Cant wait to get this tape again.

The rolling hills of Tennessee farmland, framed in lovely patchwork quilt patterns, set the stage for Dolly Parton's (of Grand Ol' Opry fame) warm childhood memories. The text comes directly from Parton's autobiographical hit country and western song of the same name. Perhaps the grammar is imperfect, but what C&W song ain't rife with grammatical errors--it's part of the vernacular. The story centers on a poor, but happy and loving, family (yes, they do exist) who find clever ways to deal with their poverty. As winter approaches, Mama sews a coat for her daughter from a box of scraps that someone has given her. Of course her classmates make fun of her for having a coat made of rags. But sticks and stones... "And although we had no money / I was rich as I could be / in my coat of many colors / that Mama made for me." That doesn't mean the child's feelings aren't hurt, or that she didn't feel angry. But the message comes through loud and clear (like Parton's voice): the child's mother has provided her with the strength to deal with other children's jeers, and family love can sometimes be enough to pull a person through.

The trend toward interactive video games—with an emphasis on "active"—is a welcome one for parents and kids alike. Play TV Baseball 3 is an updated version of the earlier version of the virtual reality game, with loads of realistic touches that will have baseball fans jumping off the sidelines and into the game. Simply plug the base into your TV or VCR, pick up the wireless bat, and play ball! Play against a friend or choose from one of 12 teams. Rules are the same as regular baseball, whether you’re at the plate, on the mound, or in the field: swing away for a home run, lay down a bunt to advance base runners, steal a base, strike out the batter with six different pitches (fastball, curve, screwball, slider, splitter, or change up), or field the ball and choose which base runner to throw out—or maybe you’ll turn a double play! Entertaining music and commentary included. Games need never be called on account of rain again! For 1 to 4 players. Six AA batteries required (not included). --Emilie Coulter

This decade-spanning compilation charts the singer-dancer-actress's transformation from rebellious teenager to sexy diva, along the way check-listing major hits like "Nasty," "Miss You Much," "What Have You Done for Me Lately?" and "Rhythm Nation." Two new tracks bookend the set, but even the older material--most of it helmed by writer-producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis--holds up remarkably well. --Courtney Kemp

Why is Janet Jackson's Janet the best Michael Jackson album since Thriller and the best Madonna album since..., well, since ever? Perhaps it's because Michael's kid sister is the only one of these three aerobic video stars with enough smarts to realize that sex, hooks, and beats are all that matter in this field of lightweight dance pop. Or perhaps it's because the sexuality Janet radiates through her sweet melodies and hip-tugging grooves is so much more credible than Michael's arrested prepubescence or Madonna's nothing-personal-just-business comeons. After her embarrassing posture as a sociocultural analyst on 1989's Rhythm Nation 1814, Janet has returned to her strength--using her odd mix of girlishness and maturity to make dance numbers about personal relationships ring exceptionally true. Even so, the 75-minute, 27-track Janet doesn't really work as an album; there's too much filler and the between-song transitions quickly grow tiresome. The album is full of killer singles, though, starting with such proven cuts as the extremely slinky "That's the Way Love Goes" and rock-guitar-driven "If," and featuring such future hits as the Prince-like "This Time," the Motown-like "Because of Love," the breathy ballad "Where Are You Now" and the inspired Stax cover, "What'll I Do. --Geoffrey Himes

Picking up where the breakthrough funk-pop of Control left off, Janet Jackson and her production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis laced Rhythm Nation with high-minded references to societal ills--seldom the favored province of dance music, but a daring attempt nonetheless. Songs like "State of the World" and "The Knowledge" follow in the tradition of "free your mind and your ass will follow." Still, aside from the title track, it was the pure pop fare and dance music that stormed the charts: "Escapade," "Love Will Never Do (Without You)," "Alright," and "Come Back to Me" concentrate on the politics of personal relationships, not public policy, while "Black Cat" burns the place down with a fierce burst of hard rock. Rhythm Nation 1814 doesn't necessarily hang together thematically, but it's so chock full of hits, you scarcely notice. --Daniel Durchholz
