:
ldeal for households with older TVs, the Terk VS4Mod+ lets you connect up to four video components to a single TV input, saving you time and effort each time you want to watch a different video source. Simply connect your DVD player, satellite receiver, VCR, video game console, or camcorder to any of the modulator's four inputs (each features both high-resolution S-video and composite video jacks), and then run a cable between the TV and the modulator (which offers the choice of S-video, composite video, and RF outputs). 0nce connected, the modulator converts all of the A/V sources to VHF, letting you view them on channels 3 or 4 of any TV.

You can then easily switch between the A/V sources using an existing remote, letting you watch a movie one moment and play a game the next without manually swapping cables. And when you're not using the VS4Mod+, the modulator switches to the antenna/cable output and plays normal TV reception. The device even offers a learning lR remote option for added simplicity, along with an informative LED display that identifies the current source.

So get the most out of your TV with the VS4Mod+ modulator/switcher, which carries a one-year warranty against defects.

Buyer's feedback: 1 out of 5 stars - * doesn't work as it should ...
My TV is only 4 years old and this is not compatible with it. It renders pictures very fuzzy and red from both the DVD palyer and the VCR. It has a buzz in the sound, doesn't have a remote, and is a huge disappointment. I really regret buying it, as it has failed on every level

Buyer's feedback: 3 out of 5 stars - Can't use it.
Well i need a switcher that will work with a wireless cameras system and this will not work the creen kepts moving and will not stay still. If i just run it to the vcr then to the tv its fine... i can't use it at all.

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - * Works like it should ...
This works like you'd expect. Pop 4 things on it (in my case, my PS2, GCN/N64/SNES cable, and a couple of my Namco plug and plays) and plug it into your TV. Previously, I had to switch the cables to switch my games. Now I just hit a button! Just make sure you have a Radio Shack handy, though. It doesn't come with cables to hook to switch up to your TV (male-male cables.)

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - VS4-MOD+ A Swiss Army Knife for remote Audio/Video switching
OVERVIEW
If you have too many components to connect them all to your TV or receiver at once, consider the Terk VS4-MOD+. It has 4 sets of stereo AV inputs with both composite video and S-Video jacks. It has one stereo AV output with both composite video and S-Video jacks. It has one 75 Ohm F-type RF input and one 75 Ohm F-Type RF output. It will route signals in a surprising combination of ways. Signal quality was very good, with only slight darkening detectable when using the built in RF modulator. I detected no appreciable distortion, noise or artifacts in either video or audio outputs.

USER OPERATION
When the unit is off, it is a pass-through for the RF input and output connectors. When turned on, it takes one of the four AV inputs and routes it to the AV output. The video input can be either composite or S-Video. If the input is S-Video, the signal is sent to both the composite and S-Video outputs. If the input signal is composite, the signal is sent only to the composite output. In addition, the output signal is modulated and sent to the RF output on either channel 3 or 4 depending on the rear switch position. Take note, that the modulator is monophonic. If a stereo signal is input via the AV jacks, it is downmixed to mono before modulation. One bit of good news is that movies encoded with macrovision, like South Pacific, can be switched through the RF modulator without the annoying color shifting. The VS4-MOD+ does not circumvent macrovision encoding, but it doesn't fall on its face like some modulators that are built into VCRs. When the VS4-MOD+ is turned on, the RF input signal is not selectable. You have to turn it off to pass through the RF signal.

THE THREE BUTTONS
There are three buttons on the front: Power, Select, and Scan. The power switch is useful to switch between the RF input and one of the four AV inputs. The Select switch is useful to sequentially select one of the four AV inputs. Each time the select button is pressed, the AV input is changed in the following order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, ... The select button can also be used to stop the unit from scanning. The scan button's usefulness is something of a mystery. It starts the unit automatically switching between the 4 AV inputs with a fixed duration between switches. The duration is adjustable from fast to slow in 8 steps by pressing the Scan button multiple times. The only way to stop the from scanning, once it is started, is to press the select button. If the unit is turned off while scanning, it resumes scanning when powered back on!

REMOTE CONTROL
One of the nicer features, is the VS4-MOD+ remote learning capability. It can learn three IR signals from an arbitrary remote that will operate the Power, Select, and Scan functions. I tried it successfully with remotes from Pioneer, Sony, and JVC. The learning sequence in the one-sheet manual incorrectly states what letters will appear on the unit's single character red LED display. The order in which "C" and "S" appear is reversed. In addition, for anyone having difficulty, once the letter "F" is seen on the display, press no other buttons on the remote before pressing the select button on VS4-MOD+.

HMMM...
The unit remembers its selected input if power is turned off. If AC power to the wall-wart power supply is removed then re-applied, the unit remains off until turned back on. It still remembers its previously selected input after total power interruption. Alas, there is no way to directly select one of the four AV inputs. The bottom line is that even with a sophisticated remote control, there is no way to absolutely program a sequence or macro that will select a specific input. You will have to be able to see the red LED display digit to tell which of the four inputs is selected. The red display character is dim and about an inch behind the dark red panel. The lack of discrete input channel selection earns four stars for this otherwise excellent AV switcher. The mistake in the remote learning manual sheet and the fact that the unit must be turned off to pass the RF signal through are two more demerits, but they don't cause a further de-rating because they can be worked around.

CONCLUSION
At under $30, the VS4-MOD+ is a bargain and it nearly earns that one star back. You get a remote controlled switcher, S-Video conversion, and RF modulation if needed. If you remove the rubber feet, it is 1.75" tall by 9.75" wide and about 5.5" deep. The wall-wart is very small at 9VDC and 200 mA. I recommend the Terk VS4-MOD+ because there's lots of bang for the buck in a small package.

Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, the eighth Pokémon movie, ranks as one of the best features in this popular franchise. Director Kunihiko Yuyama and writer Hideki Sonoda sensibly keep the adventures and threats to a scale that's appropriate for the characters. (The first movies put the world at risk, and while Ash Ketchum is a good kid, he's not someone who can credibly save the planet.) Ash, Brock, Max, and May journey to Cameron Palace for a tournament that celebrates the valor of Prince Aaron, who saved the realm from destruction 1,000 years ago. Ash and Pikachu win, but the mischievous Mew kidnaps Pikachu, whom he's befriended. Prince Aaron's Pokémon companion Lucario awakens from the victor's staff to lead Ash and the gang to the Tree of Beginning, a mountain that is also a living entity. Ash risks his life to rescue Pikachu, proving the depth of their friendship to Lucario. The film includes lots of CG effects, most of which work well with the drawn animation: the earlier Pokémon films tended to look like two different movies spliced together.

The two-disc set also includes The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon: A 10th Anniversary Special. In this 40-minute adventure, Dr. Yung invites Misty and Ash to take part in a special tournament on his new battle system. Yung creates formidable Mirage Pokémon from raw data, culminating in a super-version of Mewtwo, the powerful psychic Pokémon from the first features. Once again, friendship and kindness triumph over greed and arrogance, although the special ends with the words, "To be continued..." A CD is always more compelling when you know it's lifted from the artist's autobiography, and that's certainly the case with Confession, Usher's first record since 2001's 8701. The Atlanta singer's string of hits over the past decade have been decidedly PG-13 rated, almost veering towards teen pop, but he's changed all that on this co-produced offering, which he claims is "the real him." It would be too simplistic to just brand this record a break-up record, chronicling his public split with TLC's Rozonda "Chili" Thomas; it is that, but so much more. It would be more accurate to call this Usher's coming of age record, bridging the gap from boy to man, as he navigates the emotional fallout from the disintegration of his relationship, and the events that led up to it--real or imagined. But other than a guilty conscience, it seems unclear why Usher feels compelled to disgorge his secret life, as he documents his infidelities, transgressions, and emotional perfidy in the album's prodigious twenty one songs, that range from insinuating sultry R&B grooves to the decidedly crunky "Yeah," which pairs an insistent keyboard romp with Lil' Jon's assertive beats, and Ludacris' rather humid rhymes. --Jaan Uhelszki

Fade to Black is a document of Jay-Z’s self-proclaimed final concert; a grand affair that took place before a sold-out crowd at New York’s Madison Square Garden in November 2003. (But anyone who follows celebrity news knows that Jay-Z was out of retirement and back performing at the Garden just a year later.) Fade to Black is a legitimately powerful record of a truly historic event in the annals of rap. Muttering offhand narration with typical bored, streetwise affect, Jay hails the concert as a momentous occasion for being the first time a hip-hop show was allowed to headline at the Garden.

It’s unlikely that the full impact of the live performances will hit home to viewers unfamiliar with Jay-Z and his Roc-A-Fella Records stable of artists. Another frustration is trying to identify the array of visitors who trade raps on Jay’s stage. Included in the star-studded lineup are Missy Elliott, Foxy Brown, Pharell, Ghostface Killah, Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, and R. Kelly. One unmistakable figure--and we do mean figure--is Jay’s squeeze Beyonce, who raises the temperature and the roof with her skimpy outfit, flowing hair, soulful yowl, and sexed-up dance routine that leaves her boyfriend and the whole of Madison Square Garden slack-jawed with animal desire.

Twenty cameras captured the event, and some of the most powerful sequences are sweeping moves across the swirling, blissed-out masses as they lip sync along in perfect unison with Jay-Z’s complex, profane, quick-witted raps. Less effective are intermittent cutaway segments that show the artist in various studio settings working up beats and rhymes. These amateurish home video breaks may give some insight to Jay’s perfectionism and dedication to his craft, but they detract from the visceral power of the beautifully executed performance footage. --Ted Fry

On his third studio effort (and fourth overall), 22-year-old R&B/pop star Usher Raymond makes the not-so-simple transition from post-teen heartthrob to love man. He does it with solid songs and a generous helping of charisma and vocal acumen, making this much-delayed collection a hot summer treat. Usher is aided in his musical efforts by renowned hit-makers like the Neptunes, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (who deliver soaring ballads like "Can U Help Me"), Jermaine Dupri, and new jack Edmund Clement who penned the irresistible single "U Remind Me." With catchy tracks and emotive vocals, Usher revs up his sex quotient and unleashes a winning blend of street-honed jams and passionate love songs. --Amy Linden
