Review:
The Tivoli Model 0ne has been praised far and wide for its high-quality sound, small size, and cool, retro styling. We got our hands on a sample unit and came away impressed, just as many others have. Anyone who wants a compact, stylish radio with surprisingly good sound should give the Model 0ne a look.

Design
ln many ways, the Model 0ne is the culminating achievement of famed audio engineer Henry Kloss's long career. Designed from the ground up by Kloss, who passed away in 2002, the radio exudes understated class and elegant simplicity. We received the Platinum Series Model 0ne, which features a hand-lacquered, high gloss dark walnut cabinet that is simply gorgeous. According to Tivoli, the genuine wood casing isn't just for looks as it provides 'an acoustically inert housing' that maximizes the speaker's sound quality. At just over 8 inches wide, 4.5 inches high, and 5.25 inches deep, the Model 0ne is about the size of a toaster turned on its side-- plenty small to fit on a desk, dresser, or nightstand.

The Model 0ne's single rotary dial handles tuning for both AM and FM stations. lt feels sturdy and smooth in the hand. The dial is designed to move between stations at a speed that is a bit slower than the speed at which the user turns the knob-- a 5 to 1 ratio, to be exact. This 'ratio' dialing technique makes it far easier to tune stations accurately and quickly. lt's a nice touch that sets the unit apart from other desktop radios.

The tuner band selection and volume dials are easy to control. Plus, they're well designed for hands of all sizes. A small LED power indicator, as well as an LED that helps determine signal strength, are positioned between the dials. We liked the light-colored face and dark lettering printed on the Platinum Series model we reviewed; it made for easy operation in dimly-lit rooms. The Model 0ne's single, 3' driver is protected by a handsome metal speaker cover. Tivoli adds that the speaker is enhanced by a 'multi-stage frequency contouring circuit that adjusts the speaker's output over half-octave increments.' The result, Tivoli claims, is 'musically accurate tonal balance and bass response.'

The back of the unit features a coaxial antenna jack for the included FM antenna wire. While the Model 0ne also has an internal FM antenna, Tivoli recommends using the supplied external one for tricky tuning in locales with a lot of stations crammed together. There's a handy switch for switching between the internal and external antennae. A standard 3.5mm headphone jack is also provided, as is a 3.5mm auxiliary line in port for plugging in your iPod or other music device. lf you want to use the Model 0ne as a component tuner-- not a bad idea given the overall quality and accuracy of the tuning circuitry-- Tivoli has provided a 3.5mm output port. The back panel also sports separate ports for AC and DC power, making the unit a great choice for boating or RV use.

Listening Pleasure
As with the Tivoli iPal portable speaker system, we were initially skeptical about the performance of a small, one-speaker unit that only offers monaural sound. The reality is that most small two-speaker systems don't allow you to place the speakers very far apart anyway, and the Model 0ne's rich, resonant sound more than made up for its lack of true stereo separation. Plus, the Model 0ne is a single, elegant box with no annoying speaker cords.

While the Model 0ne isn't designed to provide earth-shattering sound at high volume, it produces surprising clarity and fullness at normal listening levels. When turned all the way up, the unit's rich sound persists and we suspect that Tivoli engineered the Model 0ne's volume level to max out before any distortion arises. lf you don't need a lot of volume, the Model 0ne delivers. As with the iPal, we were left scratching our heads and wondering how such great sound could come from such a little box.

The Model 0ne's tuning accuracy is also impressive; we were able to dial in stations we didn't even know existed. Tivoli says this is due to the unit's discrete-component FM tuner technology, which was originally developed for cellular telephones. Whatever Tivoli has done here, they did it right; closely-spaced stations are a breeze to tune.

Pros
  • Compact form factor
  • Excellent sound
  • Supremely accurate tuning
Cons
  • Not engineered to produce extremely high volume levels

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - * Best Radio Ever ...
This is a classy, high quality piece of audio equipment with amazing sound and an unobtrusive footprint. There is absolutely no frills between your ear and the airwaves. This unit's refreshing simplicity leaves you free to re-live the days of early radio, and find new joy as you and your family gather around to tune in to your favorite stations.
And it's so darn small and handsome!

Buyer's feedback: 2 out of 5 stars - What's all the hoopla about?
I'd heard many positive reviews for these radios, and figured that plus the astronomical price must mean it's got something going for it. Wrong. Other than the heavy wood cabinet, this is a run of the mill table radio. The reception is no better than any other radio, including the FM tuner in my cell phone - even with an external antenna. The sound is OK but nothing to rave about. I've had 30 year old Sony table radios that sounded just as good or better. A close look at the componentry reveals this is the same electronic junk that has flooded this country since the American manufacturers threw in the towel. This is a classic case of the placebo effect - it looks cool, and the box raves about it's superiority, so everyone just jumps on the bandwagon.

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - * lacking just a little... ...
I like the sound the radio produces very much. I only use it to listen to the Red Sox. I find 2 things a little disappointing. Although the tuning dial has a ratio that gives you some extra turning to tune in the right spot, the exact station location is easy to tune past (for the broadcast I am looking for) and the little yellow light doesn't have much leeway with respect to brightness. The antenna must be positioned just so for any of this to happen. I do not know whether an FM antenna would fix this or not. The good antennas are not cheap and I was trying to keep my investment to the price of the unit.

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - Good Radio, Just one small issue.
This is a great radio the only issue I have with it is that the FM reception should be stronger. Not that it is bad. The FM reception is good but for the money I paid for this product I should get great FM reception. On some radio stations I have to turn the radio a certain direction to get good reception, also when I walk around the room depending on where I'm standing I get interference on some stations.

As a whole though this is a great radio. On the scale of 0 to 10, 10 being best, this radio is a 9.

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - * Good radio if you know what you want ...
I purchased this radio about 2 years ago and I thought I would write a short review for you potential buyers. First, let me tell you what this radio is and is not. This radio is a "handsome" well built radio that will pick up FM stations pretty well. I would recommend getting a cheap FM antenna because it has a place on the back of the radio for an extra FM antenna. If you are wanting this radio to listen to talk radio or AM stations, do not purchase this. Though it picks up FM stations well, it is not made for AM stations. Unless you live in a metropolitian area, you wont pick up AM stations very well. In fact, I am not sure why AM is even on this radio. There is a place on the back of the radio to hook up an external FM antenna but nothing for AM. Just an FYI in case you like AM stations.

Another feature I do like that this radio has is it comes with an "AUX" jack if you want to hook up say, an Ipod, laptop or any other audio source. In fact, I have my laptop hooked up to it and switch it over to "AUX" when I watch DVD's or listen to my music collection. I even enjoy listening to baseball games through [...]. Great sound and much better sounding then my built in laptop speakers. I purchased a 4-6 foot chord from Radio Shack that one end hooks into my headphone jack in my laptop and the other end hooks to the back of the radio in the "AUX" jack. You can listen to FM or AM or switch it over to "AUX" and listen to your laptop or any other audio source. The sound will easily fill up a room. I didnt intend to purchase this radio to be my computer speaker but it works great for this. Just plug your computer into this radio and use it to listen to music, internet radio stations or your favorite music collection. This radio easily fill a room if you turn it up and it sounds great for something this small.

So having said this, if you want to get this radio to listen to FM stations and listen to music, get it. Hook your portable CD player to it, Ipod, or laptop and it sounds great. FM stations sound very good. However, dont get it if you like talk radio or AM radio since it doesnt pick up AM stations very well. If you want a radio that picks up AM stations get a GE Super Radio or a Grundig S350 radio. [...] I always like to mention this website because they have some pretty cool stuff if you are into radios, etc.
Well, I hope this helps and good luck!

It's a measure of the ongoing popularity of Karen and Richard Carpenter that the 2002 release of this video collection in DVD format comes nearly 20 years after Karen's death. The duo's heyday mostly preceded the MTV age, so this 15-song, 55-minute anthology is a bit of a visual hodgepodge, composed of still photos, footage from TV shows and concerts, promo clips, fleeting attempts at conceptual videos, and other weirdness (film of Carpenters albums being pressed on the assembly line? Hey, whatever). You'll see an array of bad haircuts and outfits and a whole lot of lip-syncing, but in the end, it's the music that counts. And the Carpenters' signature sound, with its brilliant arrangements, its lush harmonies, and Karen's exquisite alto voice, was easy-listening pop at its finest. If nothing else, Carpenters: Gold offers another chance to hear that music in all its glory. --Sam Graham

With a gentle tug at the heartstrings, Evelyn tells the true story of an imperfect father whose devotion brought much-needed change to rigid Irish law. It's a labor of love for star and coproducer Pierce Brosnan, who brings just the right touch of Everyman charm to his role as Desmond Doyle, a struggling Dublin tradesman, father of three, and chronic pub-crawler whose wife abandons their family the day after Christmas, 1953. Desmond's a loving father who's boyishly irresponsible; Irish law dictates the removal of his children to stern Catholic orphanages, and his battle for custody is aided by two lawyers (Stephen Rea, Aidan Quinn) who seize this opportunity to revolutionize the courts. With straightforward, unobtrusive style, director Bruce Beresford draws fine performances from Brosnan, Julianna Margulies (as a barmaid who inspires Desmond's sobriety), and especially young Sophie Vavasseur in the title role as Desmond's bright, determined daughter. Sentimental without being saccharine, Evelyn is simple, well made, and bursting with genuine Irish spirit. --Jeff Shannon

Few would accuse Fantasia of a reluctance to abide by the wisdom that what you've got, you should flaunt, and the vocal gusto she slathers over her full-length debut gets partial credit for earning--and keeping--your attention. To a greater extent, though, the high-wattage help heaped over the Idol 3 champ and Patti LaBelle-sound-alike makes the disc dazzle. In addition to pitch-ins from Missy Elliott, who produced and co-wrote three tracks and busts out a two-snaps-up rhyme on "Selfish (I Want U 2 Myself)," Jazze Pha duets on the ultra-mod "Don't Act Right" and Jermaine Dupri wrote and produced the smolderer "Got Me Waiting." Surprisingly, though, it's not those tracks or even the Idol-propelled cover of the Gershwins' "Summertime" that will stick with listeners most. Instead, first single "Truth Is," a sweet, old-school R&B lament directed toward a lost love, and "Baby Mama," a spirited shout-out to hard-working single mothers, snare standout status with their from-the-gut authenticity. Keeping it real is what won Fantasia the hearts of millions on TV, and despite Free Yourself's likable slickness, it convinces that--hot commodity or no--she's not about to forget it. -Tammy La Gorce
