TomTom's 2008 730 model brings their newest community-based navigation advancements together with thei plug and play ease of use, rock-solid navigation, and sleek designs we've come to expect from them. 

For a couple of years now, TomTom's been building a foundation for some powerful community-driven navigation features, and this is the year they really start to harness that power. They began by introducing with Map Share, which lets you instantly modify street names, street direction, and custom locations called points of interest (P0ls) on your own device, then upload them to TomTom's H0ME network and download changes made by all of the other users. When you do this, TomTom gets to find out what routes your device has been taking. The data is anonymous, but it's given TomTom an enormous pile of route and speed data, which they've used to tie community data to routing with their new lQ Routes™ feature, which calculates routes using the actual recorded  average speeds of travel to calculate your trip rather than posted speed limits, giving you an extremely accurate prediction of how long any given route will actually take at any given time. As last year, the difference between the 730 and the 930 models is the 'Enhanced Positioning Technology'. The 930 contains some onboard accelerometers and gravity sensors that help it figure out where it's going even if you lose satellite signal for a few minutes, which can be incredibly useful in cities with a lot of tunnels or 'urban canyons' of tall buildings, so if you live in an area where that is an issue, you may want to consider bumping up to the 930. 0therwise, this is a superb navigator that will give you everything you need and expect, and then surprise you a bit.

I think this is a very good portable GPS navigator. I like that it has an internal battery, so it keeps working when it's not plugged into the car. I like the features, the price, the slightly larger screen, the convenient way that the suction cup attaches to the unit, the fact that the maps can be updated (easily) via my Mac, ... there are a lot of nice touches to this product.

I recently drove from San Francisco to Raleigh and had this little GPS along for the ride. My favorite feature was that it shows hotels on the display and includes the reservation phone number, so you can find a hotel at an upcoming exit, and call from the car.

There are a few little things that could be improved. (1) The automatic zooming almost always picked the wrong scope, which is a minor annoyance. When driving 70mph on the highway, I don't want it to zoom in, I want it to zoom to a wider view that shows me where I'll be in 10 minutes, not that I am still in the middle of nowhere right now. (2) The onscreen "zoom out" button is so close to the "please repeat the last audible instruction" button that I frequently hit the "please repeat the last audible instruction" button when I wanted to zoom out.

I bought the 730 about 2 1/2 weeks ago. Been using it since. First impression of the tomtom 730 was this gps looks & feel very nice. very well designed but the initial power on language was not english.

-speaker sound like it has blown out when the volume is set higher than 80%

-could use a bigger built-in memory (with all the update, it was taking up about 1.9GB out of a total of 2GB)

I purchased this unit to replace a go300 that I sold with my old car. I love the style, size, and shape of the machine, and the functionality is pretty great too. I just used it to get to and from NY for a wedding and it took me exactly where I wanted to go. I knew the way, but I thought I would run the Tom Tom through its paces. Well, it recalculated the route several times, as I didn't go the way it wanted me to, but brought me right to the front door of the hotel.
I had to update the software, etc. as soon as I got it using the TomTom Home software for Mac. Piece of cake. It asked me if I wanted to connect to the computer, I said yes, and away I went. I was even able to download a free icon of my new car to have on the screen. Very cool!
All in all, this is a very nice unit. My only complaint is the speed at which it picks up the satellites. This seems to be a bit lagging.
