TomTom's 3rd edition update to the world's bestselling (as of this writing, 8/30/08) portable navigation device features an updated chipset that provides better satellite lock and TomTom's new MapShare technology that lets you add your own map corrections and points of interest, then upload your corrections to and download other corrections from millions of other TomTom users via the TomTom H0ME website.

Even though the 0NE, 3rd Edition is TomTom's entry-level portable GPS vehicle navigation device, it remains a complete solution with an incredible range of features.


Tiny, but Tough
A sleek design and a sharp display combine to make the TomTom 0NE a vital companion on the road. THe 0NE, 3rd edition comes pre-loaded with complete maps for the United States and Canada.



Weighing less than 10 ounces and measuring 4.33 x 3.5 x 1.34 inches, the TomTom 0NE can be easily installed in any vehicle. An included windshield suction mount holds it in place. Plus, with an operating temperature range of an icy -10 degrees to a sweltering 55 degrees Celsius (14 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit), the navigator is durable enough for New England winters or Arizona summers. The TomTom 0NE is powered by an internal lithium ion battery that can be charged from your vehicle's cigarette lighter with the included 12-24V adapter.




Easy To Use
The user-friendly design also puts it a step above other navigation systems. The crystal-clear multicolor display makes for exceptionally easy viewing of maps, routes, driving directions, and other traveling information, such as mileage and distance. Measuring 3.5 inches, the TFT display offers a resolution of 320 x 240 to provide brilliant two- and three-dimensional graphics. Buyer's feedback: - TomTom One - Great Value!
I bought the TomTom One to replace an old Garmin StreetPilot which had gotten technologically out of date. The performance of the TomTom exceeded expectations. On a recent trip I used it along with a GPS factory installed in my new auto. The factory installed unit cost 10 times as much as the Tom Tom and I have to pay as much for the annual map updates as I did for the entire Tom Tom Unit with maps installed. The Tom Tom generally did a better job in selecting the quickest and best routes.

My job takes me up and down the east coast of the US, most of it driving in places I have never been before. This has been a lifesaver on more than one occasion. The screen is large and bright, easily seen even on the move. The maps are accurate and the touch screen menu is intuitive. This is in every way equal to or better than the Garmin used by Avis (for when I rent) at a much better price.

There are a couple little quirks. The voice will often tell you to turn early so you need to look carefully at the map in such occasions. And, if you turn this off it takes quite some time for the unit to recognize where it is when it comes back on. Other than these few minor quirks, this is a great value for the money.

The device is easy to learn and feature-packed. The maps are usually accurate, but in some backwater places, there are missing streets and streets that don't exist. The GPS grabs a signal very fast, too.

Navigating the maps on the device itself leaves something to be desired. You can drag your finger sideways, but during about 1/3 the drags, it leaps out of the drag mode and selects something. This is absolutely annoying and makes this worthless. Changing zoom levels is almost as difficult. When I'm on the highway (and someone else is driving), I'd love to be able to zoom in and out and move around to see where I am in relation to other towns. Because of the weird quirks, you really just can't.

Normally that doesn't matter much because 99% of the time, you're just keying in an address and following directions. The unit is fantastic for that.

The MapShare feature needs work. Marking simple streets is easy, but we have a piece of interstate in town that looks like a tangled up mess of snakes, and the construction crews are in the process of making major changes. You just can't edit something like that. There is no way to add roads that have any complexity at all. I think it might be nicer if the GPS would realize that I'm driving on a stretch of road that it doesn't know, record my course, and upload it. It's ridiculous to spend > $100 on a new map each year! I bought this unit for $100 refurbished (looks like new), and when I need a new map, I'll sell it on eBay and buy a new unit. MapShare could alleviate that pain of having out-of-date maps, but that pain is $$$ to the GPS companies, so don't look for MapShare to get too advanced.

The suction cup for the windshield works sometimes, and sometimes it falls off. I tried it on a few cars. If you clean it thoroughly as well as the glass, it helps a lot.

Considering that you can often get a refurb unit for $100, the device is a steal. For the price, I wouldn't hesitate.
