:
lt's very clear theat DVD is here to stay. So if you haven't bought a DVD player yet, here's your opportunity for a really high quality model. lf you own a DVD player already, this will make a great second model for use elsewhere in your home. 1 Pair Analog Audio 0utputs Digital Cinema Progressive (3 - 2 Pulldown) Digital Picture Zoom Screen Saver Front LED Display Unit Dimensions - Width - 16.93? x Height - 1.65? x Depth - 7.87? Toshiba USA 90 Days Labor/1 Year Parts Limited Warranty

:
Toshiba's SD-3980 single-disc DVD player packs a serious home-theater punch for an amazingly low price. lts progressive-scan ColorStream Pro component-video output produces seamless, flicker-free images for high-definition and HD-ready TVs. Built-in MP3 and WMA (Windows Media Audio) decoding let you compile music on your PC and listen to it on your stereo or TV, and you can even watch customized digital-photo slideshows using recordable CDs filled with standard JPEG image files.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of 'someday,' the SD-3980 stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs via 10-bit/54 MHz processing. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

The SD-3980 also performs 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion. Conventional composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television. The 'expanded' mode in the player's black-level setting produces richer, deeper black tones in every image. PLUGE (Picture Line Up Generation Equipment) delivers black as well as below-black signals to a television.

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each coaxial and optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. The player's internal digital-to-analog converters work at 24-bit, 96 kHz resolution to ensure optimum sonic quality from a range of digital program material.

Enhanced Audio Mode (E.A.M.) offers three sound settings: normal (boosts regular digital audio signals), 3-D (virtual surround sound enhancement via Spatializer N-2-2), and dialogue expander (which enhances center-channel frequencies in the range of human voices during playback of Dolby Digital multichannel content). 0ther playback options include Power Picture Zoom (which lets you magnify a select area of an image), bookmarking (up to 9 marks), and parental lock.

What's in the Box
DVD player, remote control, remote batteries, a user's manual, and a stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable.

This player has a component known to fail and cause the device to be unable to read any disc. See [...]

All discs are reported by the device to be "BAD." My player died after a short few months. Toshiba will replace the product IF AND ONLY IF it has a SU2 at the end of its product number. If, like me, your unit only has a SU ending, forget it. They will recommend that you first follow their generic troubleshooting guide. Of course, it is impossible to troubleshoot a defective product. Next, they will suggest you send it in for servicing. Of course, this is on your on dime and will result in the "repair" of a defective product. Save your money. Buy another brand. Avoid Toshiba. I know that is what I intend to do.

Buyer's feedback: 1 out of 5 stars - Toshiba SD3980 Died after viewing 42 movies
The player was in an excellent environment... level, clean, cool and no static. It mostly performed well until this last attempt to watch a movie when it could no longer read any disk... DVDs, MP3s, audio CDs. Tried unplugging to reset it and took off the cover to see if it could still spin a disk. After spinning a disk counter-clockwise until the LED on the panel displayed "BAD", the disk would stop and spin clockwise.

It's replacement won't be Toshiba.

I received a Toshiba SD-3980-SU2 DVD player for Christmas 2005. I rarely used it. It died suddenly on 1/22/08 while playing a DVD. Now I get "bad" and "Incorrect Disc" messages whenever I try to load a CD or DVD. I can't even get the CD/DVD lens cleaner CD I bought (which someone recommended trying) to load and run.

I just Googled my model and found a note for Owners of Toshiba SD-3980 and SD-K750 DVD players saying that units ending in -SU2 may stop playing discs due to a component part failure. It says to call Toshiba at 1-800-631-3811 for information on how to obtain a replacement unit.

Buyer's feedback: 1 out of 5 stars - HELPFUL INFO ON THIS PRODUCT
i got online today to see if i could troubleshoot before i gave my toshiba SD3980 to the local junk recycler, and found all these BAD reviews instead. as with you all, the tray became sluggish and every disk displayed "BAD". i decided to call toshiba customer service: 800-319-6684. just got off the phone and give them 5 stars for their assistance. i told them i would not pay $10-15 to ship trash back to them, and that i did not want another SD3980. they are sending me a "call tag", which is a pre-paid mailing label that i can stick on a box and send them this thing back FOR FREE. they will then send me a new SD4000. they said they have had no problems with this new model. i don't have my receipt anymore so they told me to just include a letter stating this fact.

so altho not at all pleased with the product, am very pleased - SO FAR- with customer service.

Like other reviewers I have experienced the "Incorrect Disk" error after very minimal use. I won't even think of taking it in for a repair. Hello trash can.

You can say this about D.E.B.S.: director Angela Robinson’s 2005 feature isn’t very good, but it is surprisingly entertaining. The premise, which bears a passing resemblance to any number of previous films (from Heathers and Clueless to Charlie’s Angels and the Austin Powers franchise), involves a secret government agency recruiting young women as spies, based on their smarts, their ability to lie convincingly, and the fact that they look fetching in ultra-miniskirts. Four of the D.E.B.S. are then charged with collaring "criminal mastermind" Lucy Diamond (Jordana Brewster), who has returned to the States after hatching all manner of nefarious plots overseas. Then comes the twist: Diamond is gay, and one of our heroines, Amy Bradshaw (Sara Foster), unexpectedly finds herself falling in love with her. Out goes the espionage element; in comes the love story, and therein lies the surprise, as this burgeoning lesbian relationship is handled with unexpected sympathy, even tenderness. Sure, the acting, even by veteran grownups like Holland Taylor and Michael Clarke Duncan, is almost uniformly lame, and the script is silly; overall, the film would have to put on considerable weight to even be considered frothy. Still, D.E.B.S. isn’t a bad way to kill a couple of hours. DVD bonus features include a making-of featurette and commentary by Robinson and the cast. --Sam Graham

The teaming of Johnny Knoxville (Jackass: The Movie) and Seann William Scott (Dude, Where's My Car?) as well as the presence of the '70s-flavored car chases that were a specialty of the TV series guarantees that The Dukes of Hazzard will be even more lowbrow than the CBS TV series (1979-85) that inspired it. However, this brain-damaging comedy is more "rehash" than "remake," as good ol' Georgiaboys Luke Duke (Knoxville) and his cousin Bo (Scott) are frequently upstaged bythe General Lee, the Confederate-flagged '69 Charger that they drive, jump, race, and fly in as they smuggle moonshine for their Uncle Jesse (Willie Nelson). Meanwhile, cousin Daisy Duke (Jessica Simpson) is reliably available to model her short-shorts (aka "Daisy Dukes") and awesome figure (and let's face it, Simpson's talents pretty much begin and end right there), while corrupt honcho Boss Hogg (Burt Reynolds, who should know better) recruits a local NASCAR star to advance his wily scheme of converting Hazzard County into a strip mine. Director Jay Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers) manages to mine some good-natured humor from the movie's oval-track detour and a few colorful supporting players (notably Kevin Hefferman as the Duke's pal Sheev). Otherwise, consider yourself warned: The Dukes of Hazzard is shameless Hollywood product at its most forgettable, trafficking in shameless white, rural Southern stereotypes. If you can make itto the end, there's a blooper reel to reward your endurance. --Jeff Shannon

DVD features
Yes, the unrated edition of The Dukes of Hazzard has nudity... but no, it's not of Jessica Simpson, but topless sorority girls. There are also two sets--"PG-13" and "unrated"--of deleted scenes and bloopers. The four minutes of unrated deleted scenes (supplementing the 25 minutes of "PG-13" deleted scenes) include more sorority girls and a menage à trois for Johnny Knoxville . The five minutes of unrated bloopers (the same amount as the "PG-13" bloopers) feature a few more girls but mostly bad language. Featurettes discuss the Daisy Duke short shorts (and show how you can make your own), car stunts, and the making of the movie (narrated by a cast member of the original TV series). --David Horiuchi
