ln arid climates or the cold, dry days of winter, owning a humidifier makes an awful lot of sense. A humidifier protects household occupants from static electricity shocks, prevents dry, itchy skin, allows stressed lungs to breathe with more comfort, and infuses the room's environment with needed moisture to furniture, fabrics, and plants for long-lasting health. But for all of these positive attributes, using a humidifier may also produce some nasty and harmful results. lf not properly cared for, a humidifier becomes the breeding ground for assorted viruses, bacteria, mildew, and mold. ln other words, the soothing moist air exhaled by humidifier might be much more harmful than helpful in the long run. To keep the air clean and amply humidified, it is essential to regularly replace the humidifier's filter, where the impurities often fester. Hamilton Beach recognizes the importance of clean filters by offering this replacement filter from their True Air line

Review:
This top-of-the-line Cool Mist humidifier is a big step up from those old steam-spitting devices. lt features a front LCD panel from which you can select the desired humidity. Simply adjust the setting to anywhere between 20 percent and 90 percent (50 percent is recommended for most situations) and set the fan to low, medium, or high. The unit is oval in shape, and because the controls are on one end, it can be operated easily even if placed in a narrow space. (lt's 10 inches wide and about 17 inches deep.) The curvy, translucent gray rear tank lifts off easily for refilling, as does the front fan unit for changing or rinsing the drop-in filter. The water tank is dishwasher-safe. --Richard Farr

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - *
This humidifier is great, and within hours of use I noticed a considerable difference in the air quality of my bedroom. I have sinus problems and all of the symptoms I usually exhibit during the winter months sleeping in my bedroom, were no longer exhibited. I especially felt relief from the slight sinus headache I almost always had. I want to say that I also got relief from my dry skin and chapped lips. I was concerned at first because I noticed no mist coming from the fan, but I am absolutely certain its evaporation is working up to par because of the results I get. I dohave to change the filter more frequently than I anticipated. It would sure be lovely to have a humidifier with no upkeep, but I'll gladly pay to replace the filters for the relief it provides. It is very easy to clean and I absolutely find it easy to fill. I have had it for several months now. I am currently using it alongside a room heater. It has balanced out the air humidity nicely. I would highly recommend this humidifier to anyone.

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - Best one I've found so far
I've been through a million humidifiers and this is the best so far. Although you will have to fill it every day or two if you live in the desert (as I do), it lasts longer than the others and the filters seem to work for a long time too. I wish all of these humidifers were easier to fill, but this one is pretty typical and the cap or whatever you'd call it has an easy grip handle. Another bonus, the filters are cheap compared to other models that I've had.

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - *
I purchased this humidifier a month ago and have not regretted one minute.

It is sooooooo quiet in the low mode and it easily keeps our large bedroom up to 50% humidity. Depending on the day and how oftern the air conditioning comes on, I have to refill generally every other day.

I agonized on a new humidifier for weeks looking at review after review. The Vortex seemed to get good marks, but almost every reviewer said the "glugging" was unbelievably loud. As a light sleeper, that was enough to steer me to the Hamilton Beach. Very minimal gurgle...hardly noticable on this unit.

I wouldn't think twice about buying another one.

Buyer's feedback: 3 out of 5 stars - loved it......but it quit after a year
This has been a great humidifier for the past year. Sure the filters have to be replaced and for the most part, are easier to find online. But overall, I liked the digital control panel and that it covered a large area. We had it in our family room and would move it to the children's rooms when needed. The gurgling noise didn't bother me. I am very disappointed that after 1 year, it is started to not work well; beeping a lot, fading digital display and randomly coming on and off in a few seconds. It's like it knew when the warranty was up. We have worked it pretty hard, living in Las Vegas, but I would consider a less expensive one next time. Anyone need a couple of filters?

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - *
We purchased this humidifer for our baby's room, and so far it has worked quite well. Ours has no problem reaching 50% humidity, unlike problems mentioned in other reviews. The only time it did not humidify properly was when the filter needed to be changed. We changed the filter and it was back to working fine. I don't find the unit noisy when it is running, however at times it does make a random 'glugging' sound which is annoying.

You can say this about D.E.B.S.: director Angela Robinson’s 2005 feature isn’t very good, but it is surprisingly entertaining. The premise, which bears a passing resemblance to any number of previous films (from Heathers and Clueless to Charlie’s Angels and the Austin Powers franchise), involves a secret government agency recruiting young women as spies, based on their smarts, their ability to lie convincingly, and the fact that they look fetching in ultra-miniskirts. Four of the D.E.B.S. are then charged with collaring "criminal mastermind" Lucy Diamond (Jordana Brewster), who has returned to the States after hatching all manner of nefarious plots overseas. Then comes the twist: Diamond is gay, and one of our heroines, Amy Bradshaw (Sara Foster), unexpectedly finds herself falling in love with her. Out goes the espionage element; in comes the love story, and therein lies the surprise, as this burgeoning lesbian relationship is handled with unexpected sympathy, even tenderness. Sure, the acting, even by veteran grownups like Holland Taylor and Michael Clarke Duncan, is almost uniformly lame, and the script is silly; overall, the film would have to put on considerable weight to even be considered frothy. Still, D.E.B.S. isn’t a bad way to kill a couple of hours. DVD bonus features include a making-of featurette and commentary by Robinson and the cast. --Sam Graham

The teaming of Johnny Knoxville (Jackass: The Movie) and Seann William Scott (Dude, Where's My Car?) as well as the presence of the '70s-flavored car chases that were a specialty of the TV series guarantees that The Dukes of Hazzard will be even more lowbrow than the CBS TV series (1979-85) that inspired it. However, this brain-damaging comedy is more "rehash" than "remake," as good ol' Georgiaboys Luke Duke (Knoxville) and his cousin Bo (Scott) are frequently upstaged bythe General Lee, the Confederate-flagged '69 Charger that they drive, jump, race, and fly in as they smuggle moonshine for their Uncle Jesse (Willie Nelson). Meanwhile, cousin Daisy Duke (Jessica Simpson) is reliably available to model her short-shorts (aka "Daisy Dukes") and awesome figure (and let's face it, Simpson's talents pretty much begin and end right there), while corrupt honcho Boss Hogg (Burt Reynolds, who should know better) recruits a local NASCAR star to advance his wily scheme of converting Hazzard County into a strip mine. Director Jay Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers) manages to mine some good-natured humor from the movie's oval-track detour and a few colorful supporting players (notably Kevin Hefferman as the Duke's pal Sheev). Otherwise, consider yourself warned: The Dukes of Hazzard is shameless Hollywood product at its most forgettable, trafficking in shameless white, rural Southern stereotypes. If you can make itto the end, there's a blooper reel to reward your endurance. --Jeff Shannon

DVD features
Yes, the unrated edition of The Dukes of Hazzard has nudity... but no, it's not of Jessica Simpson, but topless sorority girls. There are also two sets--"PG-13" and "unrated"--of deleted scenes and bloopers. The four minutes of unrated deleted scenes (supplementing the 25 minutes of "PG-13" deleted scenes) include more sorority girls and a menage à trois for Johnny Knoxville . The five minutes of unrated bloopers (the same amount as the "PG-13" bloopers) feature a few more girls but mostly bad language. Featurettes discuss the Daisy Duke short shorts (and show how you can make your own), car stunts, and the making of the movie (narrated by a cast member of the original TV series). --David Horiuchi
