:
Rated by 'American Painting Contractor' magazine as one of the top 10 painting products to come out in the last year, the Wagner PaintEater is three surface-prep tools in one. Great for outdoor painting projects large and small, the PaintEater is the first rotating paint prep tool on the market that, in a single pass, removes paint chips, feathers paint edges, and abrades surfaces for excellent paint adhesion. Aggressive on paint, gentle on siding and trim, this tool efficiently removes peeling paint from siding and trim as well as concrete block, steel and masonry. Equipped with a soft-grip main handle and retractable side handle for optimal comfort, the tool is also designed for single-handed operations where the other hand wants to hold onto the ladder, as well as two-hand operations where high-pressure, aggressive work is required to whisk away loose paint siding, trim, and outdoor furniture. A Velcro strap offers secure hand position for ladder work. A protective shroud keeps hands safe near the rotating disk. A smoothly designed, arbor lock makes it easy to change disks without tools. Lightweight and easy to control, the unit's flexible disc gets into corners and quickly removes paint from clapboard overhangs. --Brian D. 0lson

Testimonials

Buyer's feedback: 5 out of 5 stars - * Fast paint preparation ...
This is a great product if your expectations match the PaintEater's abilities. It is a fast way to prepare old painted surfaces for new paint. If there are drips, chips or loose paint the PaintEater quickly shaves the lumps down, feathers the edges on chips, removes flaky paint down to sound wood and scuff sands chalky paint. If you need to REMOVE paint from large areas, you should look at heavier duty mechanical units (check out Metabo or Porter Cable), chemicals or heat methods.

Wagner made the unit out of plastic that is light weight and a motor that is light weight. After hours of use and while standing on a ladder trying to reach a difficult corner, I was glad the unit was not heavier. Light weight does not mean flimsy. I agree with the reviewer who noted that the On-Off button is hard to operate. The fold down handle is very helpful in controlling the PaintEater. The grinding wheel floats on the motor connection. This makes it easier to keep the face of the spinning 3M grinding disk flat on the surface your are preparing and avoid digging into the wood. The motor has plenty of power to match the aggressive 3M grinding disk. A light touch works best, if you really bear down you can stall the motor and shorten its life. There is a gray plastic housing above the grinding disk that keeps the wheel from gouging into a wall. You can remove the shroud if you want to go right up to the edge.

The 3M grinding wheel is what sets this tool apart from a disk sander. The wheel lasts a long time and does not load up and clog like sanding disks. This saves time and money. I also used the tool to clean a cement floor prior to staining the concrete. It did a great job roughing the surface and it quickly removed taping compound and construction adhesive. These products clog regular sanding disk immediately. The 3M disk had no problem and no loading. It was also good at cleaning loose mortar from some bricks that needed to be reset. I have had trouble finding replacement wheels. Order an extra one from Amazon!

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - Do It Youselfer
Excellent for stripping old paint but needs a steady hand to avoid gouging into the material being sanded. The manual says for outdoor use only. I used it inside. It works fine but you will make a rather large mess due to the dust it kicks up. I recommend a little practice before stripping "the real thing".

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - * wagner paint eater ...
I'm a pro painter and was looking for a better tool for removing paint. I often use a grinder with carbide teeth to remove multiple layers of old alligatored or cracked paint where you really want to remove everything to the wood. The "paint eater" is not the tool for those really tough jobs. It does seem appropriate for knocking off a layer or two of loose paint and feathering edges. Much better than hand scraping or orbital sander. Decent tool for the price on light duty work.

Buyer's feedback: 4 out of 5 stars - you should probably buy this
Somebody painted my deck before we bought the house. Surprise! It's peeling. This tool seems to do a pretty good job of taking up the paint without damaging the wood beneath.

If you're reading this review and you've tried hand scraping and a heat gun, your next step really should be this tool. It's going to be a combination of those tools to get the paint off of my deck, but most of the work will be with this tool.

You will need a respirator, too. It puts out a lot of dust.

Good luck.

Buyer's feedback: 2 out of 5 stars - * Effective, but not cost effective. I may be able to save you $60. ...
The good: Product does what it says, removes paint quickly.
The bad: HOW MUCH FOR A REPLACEMENT PAD THAT LASTS 15 MINUTES???

I have gone through 2 pads to take paint off roof trim. After the first pad wore out rather quickly, I made a conscious effort to go easy on the pressure, but the results weren't much better. One pad will clean the paint off about 20' of 4" wide trim, and takes 10-15 minutes. For $15 a pad, it is cheaper for me to buy new trim and nails and to replace it, and it takes about as much time. Also, the pad will cut grooves into soft wood, so using it on contoured surfaces (like window trim) is a no-no. Also, you will still have to find some other way to get into the corners, since this is a circular tool.

If you have a 4 1/2" angle grinder with a 5/8" arbor, you can use it with the pad alone and not have to buy the whole tool. Save yourself $60.

You can say this about D.E.B.S.: director Angela Robinson’s 2005 feature isn’t very good, but it is surprisingly entertaining. The premise, which bears a passing resemblance to any number of previous films (from Heathers and Clueless to Charlie’s Angels and the Austin Powers franchise), involves a secret government agency recruiting young women as spies, based on their smarts, their ability to lie convincingly, and the fact that they look fetching in ultra-miniskirts. Four of the D.E.B.S. are then charged with collaring "criminal mastermind" Lucy Diamond (Jordana Brewster), who has returned to the States after hatching all manner of nefarious plots overseas. Then comes the twist: Diamond is gay, and one of our heroines, Amy Bradshaw (Sara Foster), unexpectedly finds herself falling in love with her. Out goes the espionage element; in comes the love story, and therein lies the surprise, as this burgeoning lesbian relationship is handled with unexpected sympathy, even tenderness. Sure, the acting, even by veteran grownups like Holland Taylor and Michael Clarke Duncan, is almost uniformly lame, and the script is silly; overall, the film would have to put on considerable weight to even be considered frothy. Still, D.E.B.S. isn’t a bad way to kill a couple of hours. DVD bonus features include a making-of featurette and commentary by Robinson and the cast. --Sam Graham

The teaming of Johnny Knoxville (Jackass: The Movie) and Seann William Scott (Dude, Where's My Car?) as well as the presence of the '70s-flavored car chases that were a specialty of the TV series guarantees that The Dukes of Hazzard will be even more lowbrow than the CBS TV series (1979-85) that inspired it. However, this brain-damaging comedy is more "rehash" than "remake," as good ol' Georgiaboys Luke Duke (Knoxville) and his cousin Bo (Scott) are frequently upstaged bythe General Lee, the Confederate-flagged '69 Charger that they drive, jump, race, and fly in as they smuggle moonshine for their Uncle Jesse (Willie Nelson). Meanwhile, cousin Daisy Duke (Jessica Simpson) is reliably available to model her short-shorts (aka "Daisy Dukes") and awesome figure (and let's face it, Simpson's talents pretty much begin and end right there), while corrupt honcho Boss Hogg (Burt Reynolds, who should know better) recruits a local NASCAR star to advance his wily scheme of converting Hazzard County into a strip mine. Director Jay Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers) manages to mine some good-natured humor from the movie's oval-track detour and a few colorful supporting players (notably Kevin Hefferman as the Duke's pal Sheev). Otherwise, consider yourself warned: The Dukes of Hazzard is shameless Hollywood product at its most forgettable, trafficking in shameless white, rural Southern stereotypes. If you can make itto the end, there's a blooper reel to reward your endurance. --Jeff Shannon

DVD features
Yes, the unrated edition of The Dukes of Hazzard has nudity... but no, it's not of Jessica Simpson, but topless sorority girls. There are also two sets--"PG-13" and "unrated"--of deleted scenes and bloopers. The four minutes of unrated deleted scenes (supplementing the 25 minutes of "PG-13" deleted scenes) include more sorority girls and a menage à trois for Johnny Knoxville . The five minutes of unrated bloopers (the same amount as the "PG-13" bloopers) feature a few more girls but mostly bad language. Featurettes discuss the Daisy Duke short shorts (and show how you can make your own), car stunts, and the making of the movie (narrated by a cast member of the original TV series). --David Horiuchi
